Responsibilities
POSITION SUMMARY
The Electrical Estimator II will support the estimating team in preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for heavy civil electrical construction projects. This role focuses on analyzing project documents, developing detailed estimates, and assisting with bid preparation for municipal, infrastructure, and design-build work.
The Electrical Estimator II will work collaboratively with senior estimators, project managers, and operations teams to ensure complete and timely bid submissions. This position is expected to contribute to multiple estimates annually, typically ranging from smaller-scale projects up to large infrastructure work.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform quantity takeoffs, bid item setup, data entry, and pricing for estimates.
- Assist with bid scheduling, bid closeout, and overall proposal coordination.
- Review project drawings, specifications, and related documentation to determine scope of work.
- Compile and incorporate historical cost data, productivity rates, labor, equipment, material pricing, and subcontractor/vendor quotations into estimates.
- Support the preparation of conceptual budgets and detailed cost estimates.
- Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits as required.
- Assist in identifying scope gaps, risks, and value engineering opportunities.
- Prepare portions of bid packages including pricing breakdowns, clarifications, and supporting documentation.
- Maintain organized estimating files and documentation to substantiate estimate figures.
- Assist in bid-to-project handoff, including cost coding and budget setup for awarded work.
- Support tracking of awarded contracts, including pricing of change orders and extra work items.
- Coordinate with internal teams and subcontractors to gather necessary estimate inputs.
- Maintain and update estimating databases, including labor, material, and production rates.
- Follow company procedures and standards related to Heavy Bid or equivalent estimating systems.
Qualifications
SKILLS, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- 3–7 years of experience in construction estimating, cost control, or project engineering, with at least 2–4 years in estimating.
- Experience in heavy civil electrical construction, including areas such as:
- Underground utilities and duct banks
- Roadway and highway lighting
- Traffic signals and ITS systems
- Substations or power distribution
- Ability to interpret construction drawings and specifications.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Familiarity with unit pricing, takeoffs, and bid preparation processes.
- OSHA training (or willingness to obtain).
Software skills
- Microsoft Office applications
- HCSS (including Heavy Bid/Heavy Job)
- Scheduling software/CPM (including Primavera and MS Project)
- Viewpoint (PM module, SL module, PO module)
- Strong technical and proposal writing skills
- Strong skills with personal digital devices
