Overview

Beyond New Horizons, LLC (BNH) has an exciting opportunity for a System Engineer supporting TOS II, at Tunnel 9 in White Oak, Maryland. The System Engineer will be working as a member of an integrated team responsible for supporting the construction efforts by providing technical support to craft and supervision as well as helping to satisfy quality requirements on the project. Also, initiating action when necessary to ensure the project is being built as specified in the scope of work.

Job Summary

Systems Engineers provide engineering functions to support hypersonic wind-tunnel testing at Tunnel 9. The candidate will take ownership of major systems; coordinate facility and equipment improvement projects; follow project lifecycle (planning, budgeting, schedule, execution); perform mechanical design of tunnel components and interface hardware; develop designs and drawing packages; develop thermal-structural stress analysis for wind tunnel components and customer test material; and implement improvements to tunnel performance and maintainability. Further, they will support external customer tests by analyzing thermo-mechanical structural and stress.

Job Duties

  • Design components of a hypersonic wind tunnel subjected to high thermal and pressure load scenarios.
  • Work with Subject Matter Experts to design facility hardware with improved performance.
  • Maintain inventory of long lead time consumable components to keep pace with test operations.
  • Perform FEA analysis on tunnel hardware and external customer models with specific interest in thermal-structural stresses. Communicate results to internal and external customers to assist in the design process.
  • Respond to systems malfunctions in support of troubleshooting and direct corrective maintenance activities, ensuring a timely return to service to continue testing.
  • Perform root cause failure analyses and other equipment performance analyses. Recommend improvements to site leadership.
  • Analyze and write reports on equipment design for safety reviews.
  • Conduct and write up system safety hazard analyses and write clear work instructions.
  • Update and maintain system documentation for systems of responsibility.
  • Develop scope, cost, and schedule estimates for small improvement projects and test projects.
  • Assist skilled technical staff with troubleshooting and oversee their work; provide leadership and guidance.
  • Develop detailed technical statements of work and support the government procurement process as a technical POC.
  • Communicate clearly and utilize various methods of communication.
  • It is a condition of employment to wear PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in accordance with supervisory direction and company policy.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
  • Grade 07 (M07): A minimum of 2 years of progressive and relevant experience or any equivalent combination of education and progressive and relevant experience.
  • Grade 08 (M08): A minimum of 5 years of progressive and relevant experience or any equivalent combination of education and progressive and relevant experience.
  • Experience using solid modeling CAD software.
  • Experience performing Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance and the AEDC local area network.
  • Current U. S. Citizenship required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master of Science degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • Active Secret clearance.
  • Hands on mechanical design, maintenance, or operations experience acquired through previous employment, education, or internship.
  • Experience using PTC Creo CAD software.
  • Experience performing thermal-structural FEA, especially using Ansys software.
  • Experience in Python Scripting and MATLAB
