Overview / Responsibilities
Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions is currently recruiting a Scientist, Engineer or Technician to join our team in Southern Ontario. This is an exciting opportunity for experienced environmental, building or occupational health and safety professionals looking to further develop their career and work on unique and exciting projects.
We are seeking an Occupational/Industrial Hygiene and Environmental Decommissioning Technologist for our growing hazardous building materials and environmental decommissioning practice in Ontario. In this role, the successful candidate will be working as part of our Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental teams and national and international professional practice networks. Wood’s hazardous materials and environmental decommissioning practice includes inspections, surveys, and abatement and demolition, site decommissioning, and environmental sustainability support for management, renovation and decommissioning in the built environment. Predominantly work will focus on such materials as asbestos, PCBs, lead, silica, mould and other regulated materials, however indoor air quality parameters are also expected. The practice has an expanding clientele and growing number of staff. This is an exciting role for a well-rounded technologist.
Key Responsibilities
- Provision of designated substances and hazardous materials surveys and preparing management plans (i.e., lead, mercury, asbestos, PCBs, etc.)
- Provision of mould evaluations and indoor air quality assessments
- Provision of asbestos abatement and mould remediation inspections
- Provision of air sampling and calibration of equipment
- Phase Contrast Microscopy analysis for asbestos and other fibres
- Supervising or completing senior technical assignments including assessment and abatement programs, specification development, and reporting
- Demolition and environmental decommissioning oversight
- Evaluation of building materials for disposal, recycling or re-use
- Evaluation and preparation of mitigation recommendations for site hazards
- Completion of occupational hygiene field programs including noise and worker exposure monitoring
- Prepare and submit high quality technical reports and technical documents including specifications
- Client and regulatory liaison
- Business development
- Stay current in area of professional practice and become recognized as a specialist internally and externally
- Optimize use of internal human and physical resources in order to deliver the highest quality products on time and on budget
- Build strong and enduring relationships between Wood and its clients
- Work occasional off-hour shifts as required in order to accommodate assessment and inspection services required as part of evening, night and weekend work
- Work on project sites within Ontario and occasional out of province including working in conjunction with other offices
Qualifications
- University degree or Technical Diploma graduate with a directly related degree in engineering, science, occupational health and safety or building science
- Professional certifications such as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Engineering Technologist (CET), Registered Occupation Hygienist (ROH), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Registered Occupational Hygiene Technologist (ROHT) are considered an asset
- Ability to adhere to Covid-19 vaccination mandates of existing clients and Wood
- Minimum 2 years industry or combined industry and academic experience conducting environmental site assessments, contaminated site investigations and remediation projects
- Strong written and oral communication (English)
- Must be willing to travel independently, when necessary, to meet clients and supervise or conduct project work up to two weeks a month out of town (as and when required)
- Eligibility to obtain Federal Security Level clearance certificate
- Enthusiastic and positive attitude and commitment to technical excellence
- Strong workplace safety practices and training
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Participate in criminal records checks and/or drug screening for site access as required
- Strong communication and report writing skills with high attention to detail
- Demonstrated word processing and computer skills
- Self-motivated with good organizational skills, can take initiative, handle challenges, prioritize multiple tasks, and provide superior service to clients
- Demonstrates a commitment to personal and professional career development
- A background in building construction or building science, specific asbestos and/or mould training considered an asset
- Must be fit to wear a respirator
