Clinical Manager - Intensive Care Unit Monday - Friday | Days

The Meritus Intensive Care Unit is currently seeking a dynamic Clinical Manager to join our dedicated team! Our 24 bed Intensive Care Unit cares for a diverse patient population with a wide range of complex and critical health needs. In this role, you are responsible for the overall leadership, coordination, and performance of the unit. This role provides 24-hour accountability for clinical operations, staffing, quality, safety, and patient experience. The manager works closely with interdisciplinary teams to ensure efficient patient flow, high-quality care, and alignment with organizational goals.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required; Master's degree preferred
  • Experience:
  • Minimum of 5 years of nursing experience in a related clinical setting
  • Prior leadership or supervisory experience
  • Licensure/Certification:
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license to practice in the state of Maryland required
  • Professional certification in a clinical specialty or leadership preferred
  • Skills & Abilities:
  • Strong leadership, communication, and team development skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-acuity environment
  • Knowledge of critical care standards, regulatory requirements, and evidence-based practice
  • Ability to analyze quality, safety, and operational data to drive performance improvement
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Proficiency in computer systems and reporting tools
  • Ability to effectively lead during clinical emergencies and rapidly changing situations

What You'll Do

  • Provide overall leadership and accountability for a 24-bed Intensive Care Unit
  • Manage staffing, scheduling, and resource allocation to support safe, high-quality patient care
  • Ensure compliance with clinical standards, regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and safety protocols
  • Lead quality, patient safety, and performance improvement initiatives
  • Monitor patient acuity, capacity, and throughput to optimize operations and patient outcomes
  • Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapists, case management, and interdisciplinary teams
  • Conduct staff coaching, performance evaluations, and professional development planning
  • Support recruitment, retention, engagement, and succession planning efforts
  • Address patient and family concerns and ensure timely resolution of issues
  • Participate in budgeting, cost management, and operational planning
  • Serve as a resource and leader during emergency situations, rapid responses, and critical events

What the Job is Really Like

  • You are accountable 24/7 for the unit, even when you are not physically on-site
  • The ICU is a high-acuity environment where patient conditions can change rapidly, requiring constant vigilance and adaptability
  • You'll balance clinical excellence, staff engagement, patient outcomes, and operational performance simultaneously
  • Staffing challenges can significantly impact patient care, requiring proactive planning and real-time decision-making
  • You will regularly support staff through emotionally complex situations involving critically ill patients and their families
  • Success requires close collaboration with intensivists, hospitalists, specialists, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, and nursing leadership
  • The role involves frequent problem-solving and prioritization as patient volumes, acuity, and staffing needs shift throughout the day
  • Staff leadership is a major component of the role, including coaching, accountability, conflict resolution, and professional development
  • The position can be high-pressure, particularly during periods of high census, complex patient populations, or workforce shortages
  • Success requires both strong clinical credibility and strategic leadership skills

Work Environment & Demands

  • Fast-paced critical care environment within a 24-bed Intensive Care Unit
  • Frequent walking, standing, and movement throughout the unit (as reflected in physical demands on page 3)
  • High mental demands, including sustained focus, rapid decision-making, and multitasking
  • Exposure to critically ill patients, emergency situations, and emotionally challenging circumstances
  • Requires flexibility to respond to urgent issues outside of scheduled hours
  • Combination of administrative responsibilities and active leadership presence on the unit
  • Participation in hospital-wide initiatives, committees, and leadership activities
