Job description

The Electrical & Control Designer supports capital projects by developing constructable electrical and control design deliverables from conceptual design through construction and commissioning. This role combines detailed design, electrical calculations, equipment specification, and construction support to translate project requirements into clear, accurate documentation that enables safe and reliable installation, startup, and operation. The role also contributes to development of project scope and estimate documents, helping define work clearly and support effective project planning and execution.

Key responsibilities:

Design execution responsibilities include preparing and updating loop drawings, wiring diagrams, junction box and terminal block layouts, panel wiring diagrams, cable schedules, conduit and cable routing, and MCC single-line drawings. The role also performs electrical calculations, develops equipment and room layouts, grounding plans, and control system connection diagrams, and supports control panel layouts, analyzer specifications, and field interconnection documentation. In addition, the Electrical & Controls Designer supports project execution from feasibility through commissioning by contributing to scope development and schedule development, reviewing vendor and fabrication drawings, resolving field design issues, supporting startup, and assisting with takeoffs, estimates, procurement packages, and project schedules. This role works closely with multi-discipline project teams to ensure design deliverables support project scope, schedule, and budget.

Technical competencies:

Candidates should demonstrate practical experience in industrial electrical and controls design with strong working knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC) and relevant ISA standards. Competencies include development of MCC single lines, electrical room and panel layouts, cable schedules, grounding and shielding practices, lighting and power design, motor control center and VFD considerations, and control wiring and connection diagrams. Familiarity with reading and using P&IDs, I/O lists, instrument indexes, and cause-and-effect diagrams to drive physical wiring design is required. Experience with CAD and wiring design tools such as AutoCAD, EPLAN, or comparable platforms and with engineering and CAD drafting standards is expected.

Qualifications and experience:

The ideal candidate will have at least five years of industrial electrical and control drafting/design experience supporting process or manufacturing facilities. An associate or bachelor’s degree in engineering technology, instrumentation technology, electrical technology, or a related program is preferred; equivalent hands-on experience with a strong project portfolio will be considered. Demonstrated ability to produce accurate construction documentation, perform electrical calculations, develop equipment specifications, and support construction and commissioning activities is essential. Strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail, sound judgment under schedule pressure, and the ability to manage multiple deliverables and work effectively across disciplines are important attributes for success in this role.
