Job description

Overview

Under minimal supervision, provides professional nursing care for patients adhering to national and company standards and guidelines for specialty regulations. Demonstrates knowledge of physiological, psychological, and developmental and age specific differences in the patient population including late adolescence, adulthood, middle age, and the elderly. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to provide for assessment and therapeutic management of patient/family needs. Supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, to include the Code of Ethics and Business Standards. Responsibilities

Plan, implement, coordinate, evaluate, and promote continuity of care consistent with established standards and practices.

Assess health status by interviewing patients regarding current status and medical history.

Collect and record nursing assessments and interventions.

Review and report health status assessments, physical exams, lab data, radiographic data, and psychosocial assessments to the provider.

Assess patient/family needs and provide teaching and instructional materials.

Provide psychosocial support to patients and families.

Maintain patient confidentiality.

Prepare and administer therapies under physician direction and supervision.

Administer medications/blood products using correct medication/product, dosage, route, time, and technique.

Ensure pre-authorization and consent forms are obtained prior to therapy administration where applicable.

Facilitate dose modification by assessing patient, reviewing labs, consulting protocols/treatment plans, calculating doses, and consulting physicians regarding modifications and symptom management.

Perform venipuncture, access implanted ports, and maintain central line devices.

Maintain accurate documentation of patient care and treatments provided.

Apply knowledge of reimbursement procedures and charge capture.

Maintain work environment and restock supplies as needed.

Follow OSHA guidelines for handling hazardous agents, biohazardous waste, and materials potentially infected with bloodborne pathogens.

Maintain disinfection protocols and equipment quality standards.

Facilitate clinical operations and patient care, including managing medication refill requests, assisting physicians with exams/procedures, maintaining patient flow, scheduling consultations/tests, and triaging calls.

Coordinate communication between patient/family and interdisciplinary team as needed.

Assist patients in locating community resources.

Collaborate with clinical research teams.

Act as a resource to LPN/LVNs and medical assistants.

Provide nursing coverage for satellite offices as needed.

Serve as mentor/preceptor and provide guidance to less experienced nurses.

Participate in professional development activities and maintain current knowledge through ongoing education.

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Graduate from an accredited nursing program; BSN preferred.

Current RN license and registration with the State Board of Nursing in practicing state.

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Must maintain continuing education requirements.

Five years of nursing experience, including at least one year in specialty care preferred.

Specialty certification preferred.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in a clinical environment with possible exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medical preparations, and other conditions common to healthcare settings.

Requires standing and walking for extended periods, manual dexterity, and occasional lifting up to 40 lbs.

Specialty Specific Responsibilities

Transplant RN

Provides nursing care from initial patient contact through high-dose chemotherapy followed by stem cell rescue to follow-up care post stem cell rescue.

Manages symptoms/toxicities related to high-dose therapy and rehabilitation post-rescue in collaboration with transplant physician/supervisor.

Reports data to transplant registries and incorporates network recommendations into practice.

Assists in community education regarding stem cell transplantation.

Infusion RN

Programs portable infusion pumps for continuous drug delivery and instructs patients/caregivers on pump use at home.

Demonstrates knowledge of ambulatory infusion pump use, maintenance, cleaning, and documentation.

Radiation Oncology RN

Provides nursing care specific to radiation oncology patients.

Gynecological Oncology RN
