About the Role

The Senior Quantity Surveyor supports construction project delivery by monitoring progress through the measurement and evaluation of installed quantities against approved plans and baselines. The role integrates quantity tracking, forecasting, and estimate loading with cost and performance metrics, contributing to value engineering, cost-benefit analysis, and feasibility assessments across labour, materials, and execution strategies. Working under general direction, the position applies specialised project controls knowledge to interpret complex issues, maintain accurate MTO data from IFC drawings, and support informed decision-making. The role also provides guidance to less experienced team members while ensuring delivery is aligned with organisational policies, procedures, and business objectives.

Responsibilities

Monitor construction progress through detailed measurement and evaluation of installed quantities against approved plans and baseline estimates

Maintain and update quantity take-offs and material take-offs (MTOs) based on Issued for Construction (IFC) drawings to support accurate progress tracking

Develop and maintain forecasting models, including estimate loading and cost projections aligned with project schedules and delivery milestones

Perform cost-benefit analysis, value engineering assessments, and feasibility studies to optimise labour, materials, and execution strategies

Analyse variances between planned and actual quantities and provide insights to support corrective actions and commercial decisions

Contribute to project controls reporting by integrating quantity, cost, and progress data into standard reporting deliverables

Interpret internal and external project issues, applying technical expertise to develop practical solutions and best practices

Coordinate with cross-functional stakeholders including engineering, planning, and commercial teams to ensure data consistency and alignment

Provide guidance to less experienced team members and support prioritisation of workload across project deliverables

Support compliance with company policies, procedures, and project governance frameworks in all quantity surveying activities

Experience Required

Essential

Previous experience in quantity surveying within construction, EPC, or infrastructure projects

Proven experience with quantity tracking, measurement, and progress reporting on large-scale projects

Experience developing forecasts, cost estimates, and project controls reporting

Experience interpreting and working from Issued for Construction (IFC) drawings

Experience in value engineering and cost analysis within project delivery environments

Desirable

Experience working within integrated project controls environments

Knowledge of earned value management and cost control methodologies

Experience mentoring or leading junior quantity surveying staff

Experience working on multi-discipline or complex capital projects

Technical Skills/Knowledge

Quantity tracking and installed quantity measurement on construction projects

Material Take-Off (MTO) development and updating from IFC drawings

Cost forecasting and estimate loading within project controls environments

Progress measurement methodologies (e.g. earned value, quantity-based tracking)

Cost benefit analysis and commercial performance evaluation

Value engineering and feasibility study execution across labour, materials, and scope

Qualifications/Certifications

Bachelor’s degree in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Engineering, or related discipline

Desirable

Chartered status (RICS or equivalent professional body)

Location

Reading/Bristol/Plymouth - hybrid working with a mix of office-based and remote working.
