Job description

ROLE OVERVIEW

This is a senior leadership appointment. The Head, Portfolio Management & Wealth Management will be responsible for the strategic direction, commercial performance, and operational execution of Flamestar’s portfolio management and wealth management verticals. You will lead investment strategy, drive assets under management growth, manage client advisory relationships, and ensure rigorous performance monitoring and risk oversight. This role requires someone who combines investment depth with commercial instinct — someone who can construct a portfolio, defend it to a sophisticated client, and grow the book of business simultaneously.

WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS

Portfolio management and wealth management are the commercial engine of Flamestar Capital. The person in this role will directly determine the quality of investment outcomes delivered to clients, the rate at which assets under management grow, and the credibility of the firm in the market. This is not a middle-management position where you execute someone else’s strategy. You will own the strategy. You will be accountable for results. And you will represent the firm to its most important clients and counterparties.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Portfolio Management:

  • Define and lead portfolio construction strategy across multiple asset classes, including fixed income, equities, money market instruments, and alternative investments.
  • Conduct rigorous macroeconomic, sector-level, and security-level analysis to inform asset allocation and rebalancing decisions.
  • Monitor portfolio performance against benchmarks and client-specific mandates, ensuring that underperformance is identified early and addressed decisively.
  • Ensure full compliance with investment policy statements, regulatory requirements (SEC, CBN), and internal risk frameworks.
  • Present investment performance reports to clients and the board with clarity, precision, and intellectual honesty.

Wealth Management:

  • Design and execute the firm’s wealth management growth strategy, targeting high-net-worth individuals, family offices, corporate treasuries, and institutional allocators.
  • Lead client acquisition, onboarding, and relationship management — ensuring that every client interaction reinforces confidence in Flamestar’s capabilities.
  • Structure bespoke wealth management solutions that align with client objectives, risk appetite, liquidity needs, and tax considerations.
  • Identify and evaluate new investment product opportunities (structured products, managed accounts, thematic funds) to expand the firm’s product shelf.
  • Drive measurable growth in assets under management and recurring advisory revenue.

Leadership and Commercial Oversight:

  • Build, lead, and develop a high-performing investment and client advisory team.
  • Establish reporting frameworks, performance dashboards, and risk monitoring protocols for the portfolio and wealth management functions.
  • Represent Flamestar at investor forums, industry conferences, and regulatory consultations.
  • Collaborate with compliance, operations, and finance to ensure seamless execution across the value chain.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR

You are a senior investment professional with a demonstrable track record in capital markets. You have built or managed portfolios. You have advised sophisticated clients. You have grown a book of business. You understand risk — not as a theoretical concept, but as something you have managed in real market conditions. You are technically credible enough to hold your own in an investment committee and commercially sharp enough to close a client.

You operate with conviction but not arrogance. You are disciplined in your process, transparent in your communication, and accountable for your outcomes. You have the presence and judgement to represent Flamestar at the highest levels — to clients, regulators, and institutional counterparties.

  • Minimum 8–12 years of progressive experience in portfolio management, wealth management, asset management, or investment banking within a regulated financial institution.
  • Demonstrated track record of managing investment portfolios (multi-asset, fixed income, or equities) with measurable performance outcomes.
  • Proven ability to originate, acquire, and retain high-net-worth and institutional client relationships.
  • Deep understanding of Nigerian capital markets, regulatory environment (SEC, CBN, FMDQ, NGX), and macroeconomic drivers.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical capability — you are comfortable with financial modelling, scenario analysis, and portfolio attribution.
  • A degree in Finance, Economics, Accounting, or a related discipline. An MBA or relevant postgraduate qualification is expected at this level.
  • CFA Charterholder (or Level III candidate), or equivalent professional certification (CAIA, FRM, ACA).

WHAT WILL MAKE YOU STAND OUT

  • You have personally managed or overseen AUM of ₦50 billion or above, or equivalent in institutional mandates.
  • You have originated and closed a client relationship that materially grew a firm’s revenue base.
  • You have experience structuring investment products — not just selecting them.
  • You have represented a firm in regulatory or investor forums and are known in the market.
  • You can articulate your investment philosophy clearly, defend your track record with data, and explain your mistakes with honesty.

WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE IN THE FIRST 6 MONTHS

  • By month 2: You have completed a thorough review of all existing portfolios, identified performance gaps and concentration risks, and presented a remediation plan to the CEO.
  • By month 3: You have met every existing client of significance, assessed relationship health, and developed a client retention and deepening strategy.
  • By month 4: You have presented a 12-month wealth management growth plan with specific AUM targets, pipeline milestones, and product development priorities.
  • By month 6: New client conversations are active, portfolio performance is tracking to mandate, and the investment and advisory function is operating with visible discipline and rigour.

WHAT YOU WILL GAIN

  • A leadership seat at a firm where your decisions directly shape investment outcomes and commercial trajectory.
  • The mandate to build — strategy, team, product, and client base — not merely maintain what exists.
  • Direct partnership with the CEO and board on the firm’s most consequential decisions.
  • A platform to establish yourself as a recognised leader in Nigeria’s capital markets and wealth management landscape.
