Job description
The Project Manager leads the delivery of the Electrical, Mechanical, Public Health, Fire, Telecoms and BEMs design associated with area packages of the Old Oak Common Station Project, one of the UK’s largest and most complex infrastructure developments and a key interchange for High Speed 2.
Leading multi-disciplinary design teams, the role directs and coordinates design, engineering, and stakeholder activities to ensure the project is delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and in line with quality and regulatory requirements.
This role will work alongside Design Managers who focus on the technical delivery of the workstream, and with wider support from commercial, procurement, assurance and construction.
The Project Manager takes ownership of project planning, programme management, NEC contract administration, reporting, budget adherence and risk management. The role involves leading the relationship with subcontractors, consultants, and client representatives to drive progress, resolve issues, and maintain effective communication across the project.
Responsibilities include owning the preparation of project documentation, driving the achievement of key milestones within budget, assisting with the commercial and change management processes, and ensuring compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards.
This role is suited to an experienced and commercially astute project management professional with a proven track record of delivering large infrastructure or construction projects. Ideally with contractor experience in delivering design and build projects in a complex or rail environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Take overall responsibility for the successful delivery of the assigned work packages, owning the programme, budget, quality and safety outcomes from inception through to design completion.
- Own the accuracy and quality of all Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) relevant to your assigned work packages ensuring they are submitted on time and that the indicators are understood and communicated to the Senior Management Team.
- Co-lead and be responsible for a multi-disciplinary design team to deliver design on time, on budget and to a sufficient level of quality and detail to meet project objectives, with Design Manager.
- Responsible for compliance with relevant health and safety legislation and championing the Health and Safety culture, resolving arising issues or escalating as appropriate and ensuring safe delivery in line with the corporate safety vision. Undertake safety tours for all on site works.
- Own complex internal and external stakeholder engagement/management. Agree project requirements with the Senior Project Manager / Project Director & Engineering Lead to ensure that business objectives are met.
- Own and be accountable for project governance, reporting and control structures, with issues, risks and decisions escalated through the agreed Governance arrangements as appropriate.
- Secure procurement approvals in line with, and linked to, the accepted programme.
- Working with the dedicated Interface management team Identify and manage any interfaces and dependencies between the assigned project and other ongoing network activities/projects.
- Working with the dedicated Commercial management function, own the project budget, ensuring it is set and reported against, and proactively driving efficiency and mitigating the cost impact of risks.
- Assist with the change and commercial management process under NEC3 Option C, including the proactive identification, notification and management of early warnings, compensation events and risk to protect project time and cost.
- Responsible for the leadership and non-technical management of the multi-disciplinary design team, including the line management, mentoring and development of Assistant Project Managers and junior project staff.
Essential
- Rail, complex infrastructure or systems experience is essential
- Significant experience in project management, with a demonstrable track record of leading and successfully delivering complex multi-disciplinary projects
- Proven experience of leading, developing and line managing project teams
- Strong NEC3 contract management experience, ideally having acted as Project Manager or equivalent for at least 3 years
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- General knowledge of Health, Safety and Environmental Regulations
- Capable of building collaborative relationships
- Excellent commercial and financial knowledge and experience
- Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation, Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 and NR/L2/OHS/0047
Desirable:
- Chartered membership (e.g. ChPP) of the Association for Project Management or other relevant professional body
- Desirable: A degree or equivalent
