Job description

Essential Duties

· Leads the underwriting function in support of consumer lending goals, ensuring sound credit decisions, timely turnaround, and adherence to established policies, procedures, and lending limits.

· Supervises, coaches, and develops underwriters by setting expectations, providing guidance, monitoring quality, and fostering a collaborative, service-oriented team environment.

· Underwrites loans and more complex loan requests as needed by reviewing credit, income, collateral, and application data to evaluate financial risk and determine appropriate loan structure and documentation.

· Approves loans, exceptions, and modifications within assigned authority limits and recommends actions on requests outside of delegated authority.

· Reviews application data, decision trends, and underwriting statistics to identify opportunities, risks, and process improvements, and prepares reporting for leadership to support business decisions.

· Develops practical and creative underwriting solutions that support loan growth, cross-sell opportunities, and deeper member relationships while maintaining compliance and sound risk management.

· Partners with loan processing, branch leadership, and lending peers to promote a seamless member experience from application through decision and closing.

· Monitors underwriting workflows, service levels, and performance metrics to improve efficiency, consistency, and member satisfaction across all lending channels.

· Supports implementation and optimization of underwriting tools, systems, and vendor relationships to enhance decision quality and operational effectiveness.

· Maintains knowledge of market trends, fraud risks, and regulatory requirements affecting consumer lending and ensures the team operates in compliance with all applicable federal and state laws and regulations.

· Promotes strong working relationships across the organization through effective communication, positive influence, and commitment to the credit union's purpose, mission, and core values.
