This position is located onsite in Annapolis Junction, MD.
Job Overview
The Boiler Tender tends to and operates multiple boilers to produce steam or high temperature water for use in an establishment, fires boilers, observes and interprets readings on gauges, meters and charts which register various aspects of boiler operation, adjusts controls to ensure safe and efficient boiler operation and to meet demands for steam or high-temperature water. The incumbent can maintain a log in which various aspects of boiler operation are recorded; clean, oil, make minor repairs or assist in repair to boiler room equipment.
Pay Rate: $41.73/ hour
Responsibilities
Essential Job Duties
- Observes and interprets readings on gauges, meters, and charts which register various aspects of boiler operation.
- Adjusts controls to insure safe and efficient boiler operation and to meet demands for steam or high temperature water.
- Maintains a log in which various aspects of boiler operation are recorded; cleans, oils, makes repairs to boiler room equipment; and/or following prescribed methods, treats boiler water with chemicals and analyzes boiler water for such things as acidity, causticity and alkalinity.
- Insulates plant and distribution equipment.
- Plans, organizes work, and meets all deadlines.
- Performs a variety of tasks in any single day.
- Responds to emergency site maintenance as required.
- Inspects and diagnoses problems to determine corrective repairs.
- Performs on call and preventive maintenance duties as necessary.
- Uses a variety of hand tools, portable power tools, and standard measuring instruments.
- Performs duties such as, but not limited to: work and plant area clean up, file maintenance, warehouse space maintenance and telephone answering as required.
- Coordinates with other trade and warehouse personnel in the identification of proper and correct materials, parts assemblies and requirements for a variety of requisitions necessary for the job/task.
- Helps perform periodic stock inventories and prepare material requisitions for replacement items as required.
- Operates Government or company-owned motor vehicles and/or other equipment.
- Assists and supports other department staff and/or trade groups as needed or directed.
- Adheres to the established company safety and personnel policies and standard operating procedures.
- Ability to work overtime as needed.
- Performs other related work as required or assigned.
Job Requirements
Mandatory
- High school graduate or equivalent GED.
- A minimum of three (3) years of experience operating commercial/industrial boilers up to 1600hp.
- Possess or obtain company provided NOX reduction training initially upon hire, and every 3 years thereafter, as required by regulations governing Government equipment.
- Must be available to work other shifts as needed.
- Extensive knowledge of hand and power tools.
- Extensive knowledge of applicable codes and
- Mature judgment and ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to deal with a variety of people in a professional, courteous manner in diversified situations.
- Possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Possess U.S. Citizenship.
- Ability to obtain and maintain the required intelligence community level clearance.
- Ability to pass pre-hire background and drug screen.
Preferred
- Possess the required security clearance.
- Successful completion of Power Plant Boiler Maintenance and Operations Certification training.
- Relevant trade school or apprenticeship certification.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 50 pounds and team lift 75 pounds.
