What you'll do
Under the guidance and supervision of the Eyewear Center Supervisor, the Dispensing Optician provides direct sales and marketing, dispensing services, inventory control, insurance verification and daily financial functions for all eyewear services. This employee works with ages of patients ranging from infancy to geriatric.
- Welcomes patients to the Eyewear Center in an inviting and timely manner
- Assists all patients in the selection of eyewear and provides fitting of eyewear products in accordance with patient need and requests
- Recommends the latest in lens and frame technology to meet the patient’s needs
- Adjusts and repairs eyewear successfully to meet the needs of the patients
- Orders eyeglasses in a timely and accurate manner and educates patients on the use and care of their eyeglasses
- Provides patients with the highest degree of quality and accuracy. Sets a standard for excellence in creating a warm, caring, friendly and concerned environment and attitude toward all patients
- Resolves patients concerns based on patient feedback and correlation with the Practice Manager
- Utilizes EPIC Medical record software to schedule and arrive patients, collect payments, submit electronic billing, and document in patient’s medical record as needed
- Fills patient’s prescriptions accurately, verifies insurance eligibility, and completes eyewear center receipts
- Collaborates with the Practice Manager with the communication with optical salesmen and purchasing of ophthalmic goods
- Purchases frames and ophthalmic goods consistent with the patient base and demographic market, not to exceed maximum capacity for inventory
- Communicates and updates patients on a weekly basis regarding back-ordered items
- Maintains competence and upgrades skills through internal and external continued education. Participates in Bassett Medical Center training programs as requested
- Maintains NYS licensure through continuing education credits annually based on review of personnel file
- Maintains NYS ophthalmic dispensing trainee permit.
- *Apprentice Optician
- Working with sponsor Apprentice Optician will formulate 24 month plan and timeline setting goals for achievement and completion of Career progression Program, ABO certification exam, and anticipated date to sit for the New York State Basic Ophthalmic Dispensing practical examination.
- *Apprentice Optician
- Follows the Bassett Healthcare and/or department specific dress code
- Emotional stability, ability to deal with personal, professional, and organizational change and growth. Seeks out and accepts feedback about job performance
- Equally participates in miscellaneous clerical duties such as: filing, inventory control, answering the phone, daily financial reports, completing and submitting insurance/billing forms, and cash up including deposit
- Performs similar or related duties as requested or directed by Bassett’s Management Team
What we need from you
Education
- High School Diploma or GED, preferred
- 2 year/Associate degree in Ophthalmic Dispensing, preferred
Experience
- Minimum 2 years work experience as a licensed dispensing optician with appropriate skill in fabrication, required
Licensure/Certificates
- New York State Ophthalmic Dispensers and/or Contact Lens License are required for Dispensing Optician, required

This position is eligible for a sign on bonus up to
USD $10,000.00 Pay Range
Salary is based on a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, training, and fair market evaluation based on industry standards. The above compensation range represents a good faith belief of the compensation range by Bassett Healthcare Network, and its entities and affiliates, at the time of this posting or advertisement.
