What’s the role?

The Safety Coach – DUCP [Dispatching, Utilities and Chemical Plant] is accountable for setting direction, guiding decisions, and ensuring full implementation of operational safety standards across DUCP. This position provides authoritative safety oversight, shapes safety expectations for the organization, and builds capability to strengthen risk management and operational discipline for Maintenance activities, Projects, Pit Stops and TA events.

What you’ll be doing

  • Provide safety training, auditing, plant safety inspections, and safety support to the Production, Maintenance, Projects and Turnaround organizations as key customers.
  • Leads safety planning for the safe execution of Projects, Turnarounds and Maintenance work.
  • Serves as the Safety Leader for DUCP, Chemical Plant and Utilities area, shaping decision‑making and ensuring safety standards are fully integrated into event strategy and execution.
  • Coaches and develops frontline teams and supervisors to strengthen ownership of HSSE [ Health, Safety, Security and Environment ] performance.
  • Leads safety assurance activities, including training, audits, field inspections, and verification of critical risk controls.
  • Serves as a technical resource for complex safety issues, safe work practice interpretation, and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Member of the Emergency Operating Center, which will require on-call support in the capacity of Safety Officer.
  • Serves as the Safety focal point during unplanned outages, leading the development and execution of a fit‑for‑purpose safety plan throughout the event.
  • Lead incident investigations, as well as provide coaching to the organization for incident investigations as required.
  • Drives improvement through HSSE department and collaborates closely with cross‑business HSSE colleagues and other department stakeholders.
  • Develops and reviews safety procedures and ensures alignment of safety requirements in other departmental procedures.
  • Maintains deep knowledge of the Ontario OHS Act, Code, and Regulations and ensures compliance across operations.
  • Compile safety stats and KPIs weekly and monthly.
  • Lead for ISN contractor management: Work with Supply Chain for any new contractors to ensure they are in ISN and compliant, and risk ranked appropriately. Facilitate and coach risk rankings of contractors and set up improvement plans.
  • Oversees verification of confined space entries and other high‑risk activities.
  • The role requires flexibility to work extended hours, including nights and weekends to provide support during outages and Turnarounds.
  • Reserve worker duties may also be assigned in the case of Strike/lockout to allow business continuity.
  • Execute ad-hoc tasks, activities and leadership activities to meet the needs of the asset.
  • Serve as an on-call member of the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) on a rotational basis.
  • Manage multiple activities and tasks as well as conflicting demands while ensuring delivery of agreed to priorities and deadlines.

What you bring

  • The candidate must have legal authorization to work in the Canada on a full-time basis
  • 5+ years of HSSE experience in an industrial setting
  • Certificate or Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety (CHSC, or equivalent experience may be considered)
  • Recognized safety designation (CRST, CRSP or equivalent) strongly preferred
  • Trade background considered an asset
  • Demonstrated application of Enterprise First values and behaviours
  • Auditing considered an asset
  • First-Aid/CPR experience trained, H2S Awareness
  • Experience with LEAN, 4DX, or agile methodologies is preferred
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and people‑engagement skills
  • Ability to influence and coach at all levels, including frontline teams and leaders
  • Strong understanding of process operations and industrial risk
  • Proficiency with computer systems and common software tools
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment
  • Skilled in interpreting legislation, standards, and safe work practices
  • Ability to work across multiple lines of business both within the Sarnia Manufacturing Centre and across Shell
  • Must have the ability to adapt and remain flexible when assigned to special projects or tasks

The base salary range for this position is $71,000 - $107,000 per year.  Individual pay will be based on various factors, such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skill level, seniority, and internal equity.
