Job description

Responsibilities

You'll own mechanical parts end-to-end — from the internal mechanism to finished, manufacturable hardware — working across design, validation, and iteration with the broader team.

  • Design complete mechanical parts — from the internal mechanism to finished, manufacturable geometry.
  • Create complex, organic surface geometry in SolidWorks to a high standard.
  • Integrate electronics and standard components into the hardware.
  • Validate designs with FEA and hand calculations — loads, stresses, and friction losses.
  • Design for manufacturing across 3D printing, machining, and injection molding (at a basic level).
  • Iterate closely with the mechanics and assembly teams.

Requirements

We're looking for a strong all-around mechanical engineer with a portfolio you can show us and excellent complex surface modeling skills in SolidWorks. One or two strong projects are enough — as long as the mechanical design was largely your own.

Required

  • A strong portfolio of mechanical design work — ideally mechanics designed for robotics or other demanding, motion-driven systems.
  • Excellent complex surface modeling in SolidWorks — organic surfaces, lofts/boundary/fill, curvature continuity, clean transitions. This is our most important requirement; we won't consider candidates without it.
  • Strong all-around mechanical design skills.
  • A solid working knowledge of polymers and their mechanical behavior — material selection, stiffness, creep, fatigue, and the anisotropy and layer adhesion of printed parts.
  • Strong ability to design and integrate electronics into hardware, with some hands-on electronics experience.
  • Experience with motors, gearboxes, actuators, and encoders , and integrating these and other sensors (such as load cells) into mechanisms.
  • Design-for-manufacturing experience — primarily 3D printing (FDM, MSLA) and machining, with at least a basic understanding of injection molding.
  • Broad knowledge of standard components — bearings, bushings, fasteners, rope hardware such as eyelets and crimps, and parts for tendon routing and attachment — and the ability to select and integrate them quickly.
  • Parametric modeling and building tools/configurations for high-variation parts.
  • A solid grasp of the underlying mechanics — calculating forces, load paths, and friction losses .
  • FEA in SolidWorks Simulation .
  • The ability to tolerance parts properly , with a strong command of GD&T.
  • Strong self-organization, with realistic ETAs for milestones.
  • Good teamwork, communication, and fluent English .
  • A Bachelor's degree or higher in mechanical engineering or a related field — though a very strong portfolio can substitute.

Nice to have

  • Experience with cable/tendon-driven mechanisms, pulleys, and routing.
  • Class-A / industrial design surfacing background.
  • Experience with composites.
  • Experience with novel actuation methods.
  • Experience in hydraulics.
  • Familiarity with tribology — friction, wear, and contact behavior between materials.
  • Multibody / motion dynamics simulation.
  • Topology optimization or lightweighting experience.
  • Interest in humanoid robotics or mechatronics.
  • Experience with elastomers and silicone.
  • Scripting and design automation — SolidWorks API, macros, or Python.

What We Offer

You'll be working on one of the hardest mechanical design problems in robotics — parts that have to be organic, precise, manufacturable, and capable of surviving real use on a muscle-driven android.

  • End-to-end ownership. You design the part from concept to production geometry — no hand-offs mid-way through.
  • Meaningful hardware. Your work goes directly into Clone's androids, not into prototypes that sit on a shelf.
  • Close-knit team. A small, skilled mechanics and assembly team that iterates fast and gives direct feedback.
  • Project guidance. Senior engineers who care about craft — surfacing, tolerancing, and getting hardware to work in the real world.
  • Scaling. Our company is constantly growing. You will become part of an international team with wide development opportunities.
  • B2B Contract with 20 days of paid holidays + 5 days of sick leave + 8 unpaid days off
