What’s the role?
The Operations Support Engineer provides process engineering support to the 24x7 production organization to ensure excellence in process safety, reliability, margin, energy optimization, and cost management. The role works closely with the Production Team to provide technical assurance to unit operations and ensure production plan delivery. In addition, this role plays a key role in continuous improvement, project development, and turnaround planning and execution.
The Operations Support Engineer is typically assigned specific process units to support, as part of an area Production Team. At times, the Operations Support Engineer may instead be assigned to key studies, projects, and improvement activities. The successful candidate will join the Sarnia Process Engineering Team and will be assigned an area of support based on experience and available opportunities.
What you’ll be doing
The following are key accountabilities, but are not limited to:
- Perform proactive technical monitoring for the assigned process unit and ensure units operate within established limits.
- Provide process engineering support for operating problems and seek additional engineering support where appropriate.
- Identify and communicate to the technical, production and maintenance communities’ threats, troubleshoot performance and reliability gaps, and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Provide technical expertise and optimization recommendations to support delivery of the business plan, including feed and product quality specifications and energy/cost efficiency.
- Lead unit alarm reviews and supports alarm management activities.
- Utilizes fact-based root cause analysis to investigate, define and troubleshoot threats.
- Provide technical leadership to turnaround and major maintenance activities including scope collection, scope review, scope challenge, as well as shut down and start-up procedures.
- Generate investment proposals for unit outage, major maintenance, and turnaround related activities such as catalyst replacements, and support capital projects to ensure successful commissioning.
- Lead management of change to ensure robust Process Safety Management for changes to be implemented.
- Act as the integrator with other disciplines to meet all aspects of HSSE ensuring solutions are fit for purpose and include cost-value optimization.
- Active participate in Process Hazard Analyses to identify and assess process safety threats and develop recommendations to mitigate these threats.
What you bring
- The candidate must have legal authorization to work in the Canada on a full-time basis
- Engineering Degree is required; Chemical is preferred discipline
- Professional Engineering designation or working towards this designation
- Minimum three (3) years of relevant experience in a similar role
- Relevant industry or refinery experience would be an asset
- Familiarity with management of change, root cause analysis, process simulations, or safeguarding assessment would be an asset
- Ability to work off-hours to support turnaround and emergencies, including potential on-call support for Emergency Operations Centre

What we offer
The base salary range for this position is $82,000 - $130,000 per year. Individual pay will be based on various factors, such as relevant work experience, education, certifications, skill level, seniority, and internal equity.
