The Medicines Management Pharmacist will support the safe, effective use of medicines across Psychiatry UK. Providing clinical, operational, and governance support under the direction of the Lead Pharmacist, contributing to medicines safety, prescribing quality, and regulatory compliance across the organisation.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a pharmacist with Mental Health experience, who wants to develop both their clinical and governance skills and knowledge in a supportive environment.
This is a home-based role (applicants must reside in the UK), though occasional travel may be required for face-to-face meetings at various locations within the UK.
As our Medicines Management Pharmacist , you will
Medicines Safety & Governance
•
Support the development of the medicines optimisation strategy, implementation and evaluation
•
Support the implementation of medicines management frameworks, policies, and SOPs across the organisation.
•
Assist in the review and monitoring of prescribing practices to ensure compliance with legislation and organisational standards.
•
Support the management of medicines-related incidents and complaints, including review, follow-up actions, and learning dissemination.
•
Contribute to the analysis of prescribing trends and escalation of risks to the Lead Pharmacist.
•
Assist in responding to MHRA Drug Alerts and Medicines Recalls, including operational coordination and tracking completion.
•
Support the management of medicines shortages, including risk assessment, identification of suitable alternatives, and communication with prescribers and stakeholders to ensure continuity of safe and effective patient care.
•
Support the governance and administration of Controlled Drug (CD) PINs in line with regulatory and organisational requirements.
•
Support controlled drug governance processes, including audit and compliance monitoring.
Operational Support
•
Be a point of contact as expert knowledge to answer queries related to prescribing and medicines management from other healthcare professionals
•
Assist in ensuring only appropriately authorised prescribers have access to prescribing systems.
•
Work collaboratively with partner organisations and healthcare stakeholders to ensure the safe and effective delivery of pharmaceutical care.
•
Support responses to external medication-related queries (e.g., ICBs, pharmacies, NHSBSA).
•
Work in collaboration with internal teams (clinical, operational, governance) to resolve medicines-related issues.
Audit, Quality Improvement & Data
•
Support medicines-related audit programmes, including data collection, analysis, and reporting.
•
Assist in developing and maintaining audit tools, trackers, and reporting systems.
•
Lead and contribute to quality improvement initiatives relating to prescribing safety and medicines optimisation.
Digital Systems & Electronic Prescribing
•
Support the maintenance of the patient portal, ensuring accuracy of medication options and prescriber details.
· Work with Psychiatry UK’s internal teams and E-prescribing system provider to optimise the system to enhance the safety, clinical effectiveness and financial efficiency of medicines use.
· Support ongoing maintenance of electronic prescribing systems
· Undertake safety checks and validation of system changes (e.g. formulary updates, default settings, drop-down options)
· Identify and escalate digital patient safety risks associated with prescribing systems
· Contribute to testing, configuration and governance of prescribing platforms
· Work with clinical and technical teams to ensure systems meet medicines safety and compliance requirements
Training & Support
•
Deliver training sessions and develop educational materials on medicines management and prescribing practices.
•
Support prescribers with guidance on medicines use, including standard protocols and shared care arrangements.
Clinical Practice and Prescribing
· Maintain and develop advanced clinical pharmacy knowledge to support safe, effective and patient-centred care.
· Contribute to the development and implementation of evidence-based prescribing and medicines optimisation initiatives.
· Contribute to multidisciplinary case discussions and clinical review processes as required.
· The organisation will support eligible pharmacists who wish to develop their prescribing practice, with opportunities to undertake prescribing activities considered in line with service requirements, role development, and organisational priorities.
To succeed as our Medicines Management Pharmacist , you will have:
A Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) degree and have completed one year of pre-registration training, you will also be registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). You will demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build strong working relationships across multidisciplinary teams. Be engaging, compassionate and caring when communicating with patients, families and carers, particularly on complex or sensitive issues. The successful candidate will be able to adapt to changing priorities within a fast-paced environment, work independently while taking ownership of tasks and projects, think critically to solve complex problems, and collaborate effectively with colleagues.
Essential Qualifications, Skills and Experience
· Degree in Pharmacy (Master of Pharmacy) and completion of one year of pre-registration training, with relevant experience
· Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
· Post-registration clinical knowledge and experience in mental health, enabling management of complex medicines issues and queries
· Understanding of relevant legislation, risk management and best practice in prescribing and medicines management
· Experience conducting clinical audit and data analysis
· Experience of working within a multidisciplinary team
· Advanced digital skills, including proficient use of Microsoft Office applications, particularly PowerPoint and Excel
Desirable Qualifications, Skills and Experience
· Postgraduate clinical pharmacy certificate/ diploma or equivalent experience
· Experience in medicines governance roles
· Experience of policy development, review, and implementation
· Independent prescriber (with experience in ADHD)
