Job Description:
Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for the position of Clinical Veterinarian within the Department of Animal Care and Technologies (DACT). This position is one of two Clinical Veterinarians among a 7-person Veterinary Services team that is responsible for ensuring animal well-being and compliance with federal regulations related to the use of animals in research and teaching. This is achieved by attending to all animal health cases and providing experimental design, procedural, and training support to investigators. The team is led by an Associate Director of Veterinary Services who reports directly to the Attending Veterinarian.
The successful candidate should have (1) extensive knowledge of the husbandry and clinical care of species commonly used in research, (2) experience within an institutional animal care and use programs, (3) an unabated commitment to service, and (4) a strong desire for career development.
Essential qualifications: Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) by the time of hire; licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the United States; ability to work as a team with group communication
Preferred qualifications: 1 – 3 years practical experience as a veterinarian (laboratory animal a plus); extensive knowledge of the husbandry and clinical care of laboratory rodents and nonhuman primates; skill in many common surgical procedures used in animal research; experience with an institutional animal care and use program
Essential Duties:
Under the direction of the Attending Veterinarian, uses veterinary knowledge and skills to support university research and teaching endeavors.
Provides veterinary care to the animals being used in research and teaching.
Educates, trains, and provides support to research personnel on animal-related procedures relevant to their research needs. Works with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) to ensure regulatory compliance.
Desired Qualifications:
Experience in lab animal medicine, preferably within a university setting.
Health care and procedural experience with laboratory rodents and nonhuman primates.
Possesses skill in many common surgical procedures used in animal research.
Teamwork and group communication are key elements in this environment
Research environment experience a plus
Working Environment:
Work activities are split between an office environment and a climate-controlled animal research setting, with essential precautions in place for safely working with the animals, biohazards, and chemicals.
This job may include extended periods of sitting at a desk, using a computer, standing, low-demand walking, bending, and reaching. Lifting, pushing, and pulling of up to 50 lbs. may be required.
A dynamic work environment may require the ability to quickly adjust priorities throughout the day.
