Role Overview
As part of a CIEEM Registered Practice, we are committed to delivering high standards of professional practice, ethics and quality. The Senior Ecologist plays a key role in contributing to delivery of these standards.
This role is primarily responsible for leading ecological surveys and ensuring accurate data collection and reporting. The Senior Ecologist is responsible for managing ecological projects and mentoring junior ecologists, providing guidance and technical support to build team expertise. The successful candidate will support the delivery of high-quality ecological consultancy services, including mentoring, management of client relationships and business development. Good communication skills, ecological knowledge and commercial experience are essential.
Prerequisites
- Associate Member of CIEEM (ACIEEM) or an equivalent chartered professional body.
- Degree in Ecology, Biological Sciences, Environmental Studies or a related discipline.
- Demonstrable ecological consultancy experience across a range of sectors and project scales.
Key Responsibilities
- L ead and deliver small-medium scale ecological consultancy projects from inception through to completion.
- P roduce technical reports including quality assurance across a range of ecological projects.
- M anage project budgets and resources to ensure successful delivery.
- M anage relationships with clients, regulators and project teams.
- S upport business development through the production of fee quotes and contribution to tender preparation.
- L ead complex ecological surveys including technical supervision of direct and sub-consultancy staff.
- M entor, develop and, where appropriate, line manage members of the ecology team.
- W ork to high standards of health and safety, quality assurance and professional practice.
- W ork with multidisciplinary teams to deliver integrated environmental solutions.
Essential Competencies *
Candidates must be able to demonstrate capability in the following areas:
- S urvey design, as well as species and/or habitat survey delivery (S1-3)
- D esigning environmental management and/or mitigation plans (M2)
- H abitats regulations assessments, environmental impact assessment, ecological assessment and/or biodiversity net gain assessment (A2,3,4,6)
- A dvising on legal, policy and international standards and regulatory compliance (P3-4)
- C ommunication of technical information effectively to a range of audiences (C1)
- W orking collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams (F2)
- M anaging quality, resources and operational efficiency (OM1,4)
- P roject management including programme and financial management (PRM1)
- I nformation and document management and/or effective use of information technology (IM1-2)
Desirable Competencies *
The ideal candidate will also be able to demonstrate foundation knowledge of:
- E nvironmental management, including ecological management planning, implementation, risk management and specialist ecological advice (M1, M3, M6).
- Strategic Environmental Assessment and/or environmental valuation (A1, A5).
- C ontributing to professional guidance, standards or industry best practice (P1).
- I nterpreting ecological research to produce evidence-based conclusions (SM3).
- U ndertaking standard and complex risk assessments (HS1).
- P artnership working, consultation and stakeholder engagement (F1).
- S etting objectives for resource efficiency and sustainability (OM2).
- R ecruiting, leading, developing and motivating ecological teams to achieve business and project objectives (PEM1–PEM2).
