What are we looking for
Working within our stack design and verification team, reporting to the Head of Stack Development you will support the design, development, prototyping and testing of next-generation full-scale PEM electrolyser stacks and associated clamping/skid frame systems. This role combines mechanical design, product development, prototyping and hands-on engineering to deliver viable products for our customers.
Responsibilities
Technical Duties
- Mechanical design and development of full-scale PEM electrolyser stack assemblies and clamping systems.
- Design and prototype stack components, skid frames, compression structures, manifolds, piping interfaces and supporting hardware for electrolyser systems.
- Develop CAD models, engineering drawings, BOMs and manufacturing documentation.
- Perform structural, thermal and mechanical analysis for stack compression and frame integrity.
- Support prototype builds, assembly, commissioning and testing activities.
- Collaborate with electrochemistry, systems, manufacturing and test engineering teams to optimise stack performance and manufacturability.
- Interface with suppliers and fabrication partners for component sourcing and prototype manufacturing.
- Conduct root cause analysis and implement design improvements based on test results and field feedback.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant engineering standards, safety requirements and pressure equipment regulations.
- Support scaling from prototype to pilot and commercial deployment.
Development & Continuous Improvement
- Contribute to continuous improvement of products, processes and R&D methodologies.
- Stay up to date with emerging technologies, materials and industry developments.
- Support knowledge sharing and lessons learned across projects.
- Identify opportunities for innovation and efficiency improvements.
Health, Safety and Environment (HSE)
- Comply with all health, safety and environmental policies and procedures.
- Ensure safe working practices inn office, workshops and testing environments.
- Identify and report hazards, risks and incidents.
- Support risk assessments and implementation of appropriate controls.
- Promote a positive safety culture within R&D activities.
Quality & Compliance
- Ensure work meets required quality standards, specifications and regulations.
- Follow defined processes for design control, testing and documentation.
- Support validation and verification activities.
- Maintain accurate and traceable technical records.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of quality systems and processes.
About You
Knowledge and Experience
- Engineering Degree or similar or relevant experience in engineering
- Education/qualification in CAD, CAM functions, SolidWorks advantageous
Required
- Proficiency with 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo, or CATIA
- Experience designing mechanical assemblies, structural frames, pressure systems, or skid-mounted equipment
- Hands-on experience with prototype development, fabrication and testing
- Strong understanding of GD&T, manufacturing methods and engineering documentation
- Familiarity with FEA tools and mechanical stress analysis
Desirable
- Experience with PEM electrolysers, fuel cells, hydrogen systems, or clean energy technologies
- Knowledge of stack compression mechanics and sealing concepts
- Experience with piping systems, pressure vessels, or industrial process skids
- Familiarity with ASME, PED, or relevant industrial design standards
- Experience supporting pilot plant or industrial equipment commissioning
- Understanding of materials compatibility for hydrogen and corrosive environments
