Description

The Mashreq Countries Management Unit covers one of the most complex and strategically important regions in the world. The region, which includes Jordan, Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, and Iran, is marked by rich history, significant human capital, and considerable economic potential. At the same time, countries in the region face major development challenges, including constrained fiscal space, high unemployment, private sector weaknesses, the legacy of conflict, refugee pressures, and exposure to regional and global shocks.
The World Bank’s Economic Policy unit, formerly the Macroeconomics, Trade and Investment Global Practice, is the professional home of the Bank’s country economists. The unit leads the Bank’s engagement with client governments on macroeconomic policy, fiscal and debt sustainability, economic growth, productivity, trade, investment, and structural reform. In the Mashreq, the Economic Policy team works closely with Ministries of Finance, Planning, Economy, Trade, Central Banks, statistical agencies, and other government counterparts. Its work includes macroeconomic monitoring, policy dialogue, Development Policy Financing, Country Growth and Jobs Reports, Public Finance Reviews, Macro Poverty Outlooks, Economic Updates, and crisis-response analytics.
The World Bank Country Office in Amman serves as an important hub for economic monitoring, country engagement, and regional analytical work. The selected candidate will join a dynamic team of economists and specialists working on real-time economic developments and policy issues across the Mashreq region.
Scope of Work and Key Responsibilities
The selected candidate will work under the guidance of the Economic Policy team and will support the following tasks:
- Macroeconomic and fiscal monitoring
Monitor macroeconomic, fiscal, external, financial, and labor market developments in Mashreq countries.
- Data collection and database management
Maintain and update macro-fiscal databases, country monitoring files, dashboards, and data repositories using official sources and market indicators.
- Tracking of official developments and policy announcements
Track official data releases, government announcements, budget updates, sovereign risk indicators, energy and commodity price developments, and other relevant economic information.
- Analytical support
Conduct basic quantitative analysis on growth, inflation, fiscal balances, debt, external accounts, labor markets, trade, and other macroeconomic indicators using Excel and, other similar tools.
- Support to economic reporting
Assist in the preparation of country briefs, economic updates, management notes, presentations, talking points, and background materials for internal and external engagements.
- Data visualization and presentation
Prepare clear charts, tables, dashboards, and concise policy-relevant summaries to support economic monitoring and communication with country teams and management.
- Support to operational and analytical work
Contribute to the preparation of materials related to Development Policy Financing, Country Growth and Jobs Reports, Economic Updates, Macro Poverty Outlooks, and crisis-monitoring notes.
- Cross-team collaboration
Work with economists, sector specialists, and country management teams to compile evidence, summarize findings, and support integrated policy analysis.
- Knowledge management
Help organize and maintain analytical outputs, datasets, presentations, briefing materials, and country monitoring products to support the team’s operational effectiveness.
Selection Criteria
The preferred candidate should have the following qualifications and skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in economics (preferred), finance, statistics, mathematics, or another relevant quantitative field.
- Strong interest in macroeconomics, fiscal policy, economic development and growth, and public policy.
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills
- Excellent command of Microsoft Excel, including formulas, charts, and basic data management.
- Ability to collect, clean, organize, and analyze data from multiple sources.
- Strong writing and communication skills in English.
- Ability to summarize complex information in a clear, concise, and policy-relevant manner.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Strong teamwork orientation and ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
- Intellectual curiosity, initiative, and willingness to learn.
- Positive attitude and strong motivation to contribute to development impact.
Preferred Qualifications
The following qualifications would be considered an advantage:
- Prior work experience in economics, public policy, finance, data analysis, development, consulting, government, academia, or an international organization.
- Familiarity with macroeconomic and fiscal indicators, including GDP, inflation, fiscal balances, debt, current account, reserves, unemployment, and trade data.
- Experience using Stata, R, Python, Power BI, Tableau, or similar data analysis and visualization tools.
- Knowledge of Arabic.
- Familiarity with the Mashreq region or broader Middle East and North Africa context.

Reporting Arrangements
The selected candidate will work primarily with the Economic Policy team based in Amman and across the Mashreq region. The candidate will report to the relevant Lead Economist, Senior Economist, or designated task team lead, under the overall guidance of the Economic Policy Practice Manager.
The candidate will be expected to collaborate closely with economists, research analysts, sector specialists, and operational teams based in Amman, other Mashreq country offices, and Washington, DC.
