Middle Java Developer

About the Company and Role

We are seeking a Middle Java Developer to join a greenfield brokerage accounting platform project.

The engineer joining the team will write production code for the accounting system, develop existing services, fix bugs, and own tasks end-to-end, from analysis to production release. The engineer is expected to be independent in assigned tasks, ask the right questions, and be comfortable working with complex codebases.

Our client is a financial company operating in the investment and brokerage domain. The company is building its own brokerage accounting ecosystem from scratch, covering the full operational cycle from client onboarding and transaction processing to integrations with trading platforms and financial infrastructure providers.

Tech Stack: Java 17/21; Spring Boot/Spring Framework (Core, Data, Security); Hibernate/JPA; PostgreSQL; Kafka/RabbitMQ; Redis; Docker; Kubernetes; GitLab CI/GitHub Actions/Jenkins; Prometheus; ELK/Loki; REST; gRPC.

Location: Almaty, Kazakhstan (full-time, office-based role).

What kind of qualifications we are looking for

Technologies

• Strong knowledge of Java 17/21 and understanding of JVM fundamentals: memory management, GC, and multithreading basics;
• Experience with Spring Boot/Spring Framework (Core, Data, Security), Hibernate/JPA, and ability to write SQL manually;
• Strong understanding of PostgreSQL: indexing, transactions, EXPLAIN, locks, and query optimization;
• Experience with Kafka or RabbitMQ, including producers, consumers, and basic understanding of delivery guarantees;
• Experience with Redis and common caching scenarios;
• Experience with Docker, CI/CD tools (GitLab CI/GitHub Actions/Jenkins), and basic understanding of Kubernetes.

Development and Architecture

• Understanding of microservices or modular monolith architecture and ability to work within an existing architecture;
• Familiarity with distributed systems patterns such as idempotency, retries, and basic understanding of Saga and Outbox;
• Understanding of system load and latency, and ability to identify and resolve bottlenecks with guidance from senior engineers;
• Experience working with financial calculations using BigDecimal, with careful handling of rounding and precise accounting entries.

Integrations

• Experience designing and supporting REST APIs;
• Experience with event-driven integrations using message queues;
• Experience with gRPC will be considered an advantage;
• Willingness to learn new protocols and domain-specific requirements.
• Observability and Reliability
• Basic experience with metrics, centralized logging, and tracing;
• Understanding of security fundamentals, including OAuth2/JWT and OWASP principles.

Engineering Culture

• Experience with JUnit 5 and Mockito; familiarity with Testcontainers will be a plus;
• Understanding of clean code principles, SOLID, and pragmatic use of design patterns;
• Ability to decompose tasks and work independently;
• Readiness to participate in code reviews and accept feedback.

Responsibilities

• Develop production code for the brokerage accounting platform;
• Develop and maintain existing backend services;
• Fix bugs and own tasks end-to-end, from analysis to production release;
• Work within the existing architecture and deliver features independently;
• Participate in code reviews and engineering discussions.

Nice to have Requirements

• Experience in fintech or banking;
• Experience working with high-load systems;
• Experience with Kotlin.
