Job description

The Community of Coronado, rich in history, natural beauty, and possessing a charming ocean village atmosphere, is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, Glorietta Bay, and San Diego Bay. This picturesque seaside resort destination is linked to the Southern California coastline and the City of San Diego by the graceful and stately Coronado Bridge, and to the south by a narrow strip of land known as the Silver Strand. The 13.5-square-mile city offers one of the world’s most pristine beaches, 18 public parks, an 18-hole municipal golf course, tennis center, marina, public pools, recreation facilities, and dedicated bicycle paths. Residents value Coronado’s high quality of life, award-winning schools, tree-lined streets, welcoming neighborhoods, and diverse architectural styles. This vibrant, thriving community welcomes more than 2 million visitors annually to soak up the sun and sand while enjoying the lush surroundings and village appeal of Coronado.

The Public Services and Engineering Department (PS&E) consists of 57 talented and dedicated staff, organized into five distinct divisions: Administration, Engineering, Parks & Beaches, Utilities, and General Services. PS&E’s team is responsible for the assessment and physical improvement and replacement of City-owned infrastructure through the creation, management, and successful implementation of the City's Capital Improvement Program.

The Public Services and Engineering Director is a key member of the City of Coronado’s Executive Team with the knowledge and ability to provide strategic leadership for a broad range of public services, engineering, infrastructure, and capital improvement responsibilities. This role requires expertise in full-scale public works operations, supportive technology systems, wastewater and storm drain management, as well as emergency and storm protection planning given Coronado’s coastal setting and topographical challenges. This position requires a bachelor’s degree with major course study in engineering, or a related field from an accredited college or university. A master’s degree is desirable. Six (6) years of progressively responsible experience directing and managing engineering, public works maintenance, construction and repair projects including three (3) years of management and administrative responsibilities is required. Possession of a valid State of California license as a Professional Civil Engineer is desired.

The salary range is $221,232-$263,132, with a competitive benefits package.

Filing Deadline: July 31, 2026 Resumes are acknowledged within 2 business days.
