Principal Economist / Principal Policy Analyst, State Revenue Policy

Role impact & contribution

As a Principal Economist / Principal Policy Analyst, you will lead a small team and provide expert economic and policy advice on complex taxation and revenue issues. You will oversee policy development, economic analysis, legislative reform and stakeholder engagement, while delivering high-quality briefings to senior leaders and Ministers. This role offers the opportunity to shape major tax policy reforms and influence outcomes that support the State’s long-term fiscal and economic objectives.

Proactively building robust relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders is paramount, as is your contribution to improving the delivery of outcomes across the NSW Government through effective communication, collaboration, and advocacy with Treasury teams and agency counterparts.

What you can bring to the role.

In this integral role there are a few things we would like for you to have to best support yourself and add value to the people of NSW.

The ideal candidate should meet the following criteria

  • Strong experience in public economics and public policy analysis and development and understanding of the machinery of government, policy and legislative reform processes, and federal financial relations. Experience in government tax policy is desirable but not essential.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver accurate policy costings and economic modelling for complex and uncertain policies, and ability to apply critical perspectives across diverse policy issues.
  • Strategic policy, conceptual thinking and problem-solving skills combined with strong understanding of economic framework and concepts.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • A keen interest in and familiarity with tax policy and tax reform.
