Job description

At The Novo Nordisk Foundation Biotechnological Research Institute for the Green Transition (BRIGHT) at the Technical University of Denmark, we develop cutting-edge biosustainable technologies using synthetic biology, advanced equipment, and a global team of top scientists. Central to our mission is the BRIGHT Biofoundry, a data-driven platform that accelerates cell factory design through the Design-Build-Test-Learn cycle. By leveraging automation, synthetic biology, and data analysis, the Biofoundry supports all research groups in developing efficient microbial strains for sustainable chemical, material, and food production.

At the Biofoundry, we are seeking a bioinformatician to develop computational tools and platforms for predictive metabolic modelling and pathway design. Your work will support BRIGHT’s mission of replacing fossil-based production routes for commodity chemicals with climate-friendly bioprocesses that use sustainable CO₂-derived feedstocks. Similar projects include pankb.org, imodulondb.org, and biggr.org .

As a bioinformatician in BRIGHT Biofoundry, you will contribute to cutting-edge research toward innovations in real-world applications. Working alongside highly skilled and experienced researchers and scientists, you will have continuous opportunities for learning and professional development, gaining exposure to the latest advancements in your field. This intellectually stimulating environment will challenge you to explore new ideas and make meaningful contributions to scientific discovery, offering a deeply rewarding experience with unique opportunities for impact.

Build microbial strain design tools for large-scale omics analysis and more You will join the BRIGHT's Reconstruction Team, led by Patrick Phaneuf and directed by Prof. Bernhard Palsson and Prof. Lars Nielsen. You will work closely with skilled scientists and subject matter experts to help them translate needs into possible software solutions. As such, you will get a unique opportunity to work with frontend and backend development as well as deployment and application monitoring.

As a bioinformatics software developer, your primary tasks will include:

  • Data processing through cloud-computing services and custom pipelines
  • Database design
  • Data analytics development for bioinformatics analysis
  • Web frontend and backend development
  • Server administration and monitoring.

At BRIGHT, cross-organizational collaboration and knowledge sharing are the foundation for turning our highly ambitious goals into reality. As a member of our team, you will work closely together with experimentalists, computationalists, and engineers to ensure the success of your projects.

Essential qualifications We are looking for an independent and driven candidate who prioritizes quality, clarity, impact, innovation, and constructive collaboration. The ideal candidate will have the professional and organizational skills necessary to manage, contribute to, and communicate progress for multiple parallel projects. Additionally, your CV should demonstrate some of the following:

  • University degree in software engineering, bioinformatics, or equivalent professional experience
  • Experience with database development
  • Experience with standard software engineering practices (version control, unit testing, etc.)
  • Experience or interest in omics analysis
  • Experience or interest in metabolic modeling
  • Experience or interest in web application development and server administration
  • Experience or interest in cloud computing services
  • Excellent written and spoken English, interpersonal, and organizational skills.

Salary and appointment terms The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC). In addition, supplements can be negotiated in accordance with DTU’s salary structure for academic staff employed in technical-administrative positions at DTU (AC TAP): https://www.inside.dtu.dk/en/human-resources/during-employment/salary/salary-structures

About BRIGHT – The Novo Nordisk Foundation Biotechnology Research Institute for the Green Transition The Novo Nordisk Foundation Biotechnology Research Institute for the Green Transition (BRIGHT) is a major initiative based at DTU that aims to accelerate the development of biosolutions and strengthen the bio-based economy. BRIGHT serves as a hub for academic and industrial partners working together to unlock the potential of bioproduction. BRIGHT focuses on three main areas: Sustainable materials (Developing bio-based alternatives to fossil-derived materials), Microbial foods (Innovating food production through microbial technologies), and Microorganisms for net-zero agriculture (Creating solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in agriculture). The goal is to develop and scale innovative biosolutions within these areas, ultimately creating sustainable and competitive alternatives to fossil-based products and processes that can make significant contributions to reducing global greenhouse gas emissions.

DTU – For the benefit of society since 1829 DTU is one of Europe's leading elite technical universities. Through research and education at an international top level, we create solutions to the major societal challenges of our time and help secure Europe's global leadership in sustainable technological development. Since Hans Christian Ørsted founded DTU almost 200 years ago, our mission has remained the same: We develop and create value through the natural and technical sciences for the benefit of society.
