Job description

GroundTruth is an advertising platform that turns real-world behavior into marketing that drives in-store visits and other real business results. We use observed real-world consumer behavior, including location and purchase data, to create targeted advertising campaigns across all screens, measure how consumers respond, and uncover unique insights to help optimize ongoing and future marketing efforts.

With this focus on media, measurement, and insights, we provide marketers with tools to deliver media campaigns that drive measurable impact, such as in-store visits, sales, and more.

A bit about Team

GroundTruth is a location-based advertising and measurement company. You'll join the engineering team that builds the large-scale, high-traffic backend systems at the core of our advertising platform — distributed, real-time services where performance, efficiency, and reliability are first-class concerns, not afterthoughts.

This is a hands-on backend role for someone who likes systems with real constraints and fast feedback. You'll design and ship production services, dig into how they behave under load, and make changes you can measure. It's a good fit if you care about getting things right and enjoy working close to the parts of a system where decisions actually show up in the numbers.

You will

  • Design, build, and operate backend services that run reliably at scale — yours from first commit through production.
  • Work with distributed systems, concurrency, and asynchronous processing — and the failure modes that come with them.
  • Profile and tune for performance and efficiency, where the right data structure or a single removed bottleneck makes the difference.
  • Take an ambiguous production symptom and reason your way to the root cause.
  • Integrate with caching, streaming, and data-storage systems — and instrument your services so they stay debuggable when something breaks.
  • Ship in small, reviewable increments through automated pipelines, and leave the code clearer than you found it.

You have

  • 3-5 years building production backend systems — strong in Scala or Java, plus comfort writing Python for tooling, automation, and data work.
  • Real depth in data structures and algorithms — you reach for the right structure instinctively and can reason about time and space cost, not just recite Big-O.
  • A solid grasp of concurrency and asynchronous programming — and the discipline that high-throughput systems demand.
  • Fluency with CI/CD. You treat automated build, test, and deployment pipelines as part of building the feature — not a separate chore — and you know how to ship safely and roll back fast when something's off.
  • AI fluency , especially with coding agents. You already build with tools like Claude Code or Codex — not as a gimmick, but to move faster, take on larger changes, and reason about unfamiliar code. We expect this to be part of how you work, and we want people who push it further than we have.
  • Sharp problem-solving and critical thinking. You question assumptions — including your own — before committing to a fix, and you can defend a decision on its merits.
  • Strong ownership. You own what you ship end to end: you don't toss code over the wall, and "not my service" isn't in your vocabulary.
  • A genuine learning habit. The people who do well here are the ones still curious about how things actually work — the ones who chase a question past the point where they strictly had to, because they want the real answer.
  • A multiplier on the team. Clear pull requests, honest and kind reviews, and no hero complex — you make the engineers around you better.

How you can impress us

Pluses, not gates — tell us what you've touched.

  • Experience operating large-scale, performance-sensitive systems in production.
  • Exposure to AWS, especially Auto Scaling Groups, EC2, ELB, and ElastiCache.
  • Hands-on with AWS Bedrock and Bedrock AgentCore (or comparable LLM/agent frameworks) — an area we're actively investing in.
  • A background in ad-tech or programmatic advertising.
  • A little frontend (HTML/CSS/JS or a modern framework) — the least important item here, but handy for internal tooling.

At GroundTruth, we want our employees to be comfortable with their benefits so they can focus on doing the work they love.
