Job description

⚡About Amber Amber is an entirely new way to buy and sell power, designed for a world powered by renewable energy. We give customers direct access to the real-time wholesale electricity price as it varies every 5 mins and the technology to shift more of their energy usage to the times when cheaper renewables are available in the grid. It’s a cheaper way to buy power, a smarter way to sell power, and the fastest way for Australia to reach 100% renewable energy. We are a clear category leader in Australia for home battery automation and are growing rapidly (over 80k customers). We have also recently expanded into licensing our core technology to utilities overseas, including a partnership with E.ON Next in the UK. Amber is backed by top Australian and international investors including Square Peg, Main Sequence, Breakthrough Victoria, Commonwealth Bank, NRMA, Gentrack, ETF Partners (UK/Europe based), and E.ON Next. We are scaling rapidly and you’d be joining a team of over 200 committed to building a diverse, inclusive, and purpose-driven culture as we transform a major industry. Our products are reshaping home energy: Amber for Batteries cuts bills by exporting stored energy at wholesale prices of up to $20/kWh, and Amber for EVs enables the cheapest, cleanest charging. In 2026, we will push this even further with our new vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology. In 2026, we will push this even further with our new vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology. 💻 About the role Amber is looking to hire a Regulatory Compliance Manager to lead our retail compliance function and external engagement as we scale. This is a step up from an officer-level role; you will own the compliance framework, manage regulatory relationships, and lead a small team as the business grows. As senior operational lead on regulatory compliance you will sit within Amber’s Legal team, working closely to ensure Amber identifies and responds to its obligations as a licensed retailer in a timely, accurate, and well-coordinated way. You will also take a forward-looking view; anticipating regulatory change, shaping Amber's policy positions, and building the systems and capability that let the business grow confidently. This role is ideal for a regulatory professional who has mastered compliance execution and is ready to move into a leadership role with genuine influence over business strategy and regulatory outcomes.

👉🏽 What You'll Be Doing Regulatory Leadership & Compliance Ownership

Own Amber's compliance framework across all NEM retailer obligations: designing, maintaining, and continuously improving the systems, registers, and processes that keep us on top of our obligations

Act as Amber's point of contact for regulators including the AER, AEMO, AEMC, and state-based bodies: building trusted relationships and representing Amber's interests with credibility

Work with the Legal team to translate regulatory obligations under the NERR, NER, and relevant state legislation into accessible, actionable guidance for operations, product and finance teams

Oversee all regulatory reporting submissions, formal information requests, and licence condition obligations: ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and cross-functional validation

Policy & Regulatory Reform

Coordinate Amber's engagement in regulatory consultations, rule change processes, and reform workstreams: project managing submissions, tracking deadlines, and ensuring cross-functional input is gathered and distilled effectively

Maintain a forward-looking view of regulatory change: horizon-scanning for reforms across retail, network, and wholesale markets and assessing their business impact before they land

The opportunity to represent Amber externally in stakeholder forums: advocating for fit-for-purpose regulatory frameworks that work for innovative retailers

Maintain Amber's regulatory innovation pathways, including engagement with bodies on bespoke compliance approaches suited to our wholesale pass-through model

Cross-Functional Leadership & Projects

Drive cross-functional delivery of complex regulatory projects

Partner with teams across the business to embed regulatory requirements into roadmaps and processes: acting as a strategic enabler rather than just a compliance review department

Build and uplift regulatory capability across the operations business: training teams, creating accessible guidance materials, and instilling a culture of proactive compliance

Team & Capability Building

  • Manage and develop compliance staff

Support the business to build scalable internal compliance systems and tooling that can grow with the business, reducing manual effort while increasing rigour and auditability

👉🏽 What We're Looking For Essential

5+ years of experience in energy regulatory compliance, policy, or legal roles

Practical knowledge of the NEM regulatory framework applicable to retail energy

Proven track record managing regulatory relationships at a senior level with regulators, industry bodies, or government

Demonstrated ability to lead or coordinate regulatory submissions, consultation responses, and reform engagement with strategic intent

Demonstrated ability to manage a small team and coordinate complex, multi-stakeholder compliance or regulatory projects to a deadline

Leadership and influencing skills. You are able to work across senior stakeholders internally and externally, and bring cross-functional teams along

Excellent written and verbal communication. You are capable of drafting Exec-ready briefings, submissions to regulators, and accessible guidance for non-specialist audiences

Highly Regarded

Experience at or engaging with the AER, ESC, AEMO, or AEMC, either from the regulator side or as a sophisticated industry participant

Familiarity with emerging regulatory frameworks and passionate about the transition to a renewable energy grid dominated by consumer energy resources

Legal qualification or postgraduate training in energy law, regulation, or policy (advantageous but not required)

🌟 The Traits We Value At Amber, we hire people who are self-starters, comfortable with ambiguity, and genuinely motivated by purpose. At a manager level, we're also looking for:

Strategic thinker: You see regulatory complexity as an opportunity to create competitive advantage, not just a compliance burden

Owner mentality: you take end-to-end accountability for your domain and don't wait to be told what to do next

Collaborative leader: You build trust across functions, bring people with you, and develop the capability of those around you

Clear communicator: whether briefing the leaders, engaging a regulator, or explaining an obligation to an engineer, you pitch it right every time

Resilient and adaptable: energy markets move fast and regulations follow. You thrive in a changing environment and help others navigate it too

🌟 How We Work •

We put the customer at the centre of everything we do: whatever we are working on, it ultimately serves our customers, whether that's close to 100k now or 1 million in the future

We are hypothesis-driven: we develop and test ideas quickly, learn from what works, and cut what doesn't

We prioritise leverage: building scalable processes and technology to solve problems, not just patching them

We have fun. We love coming to work, and if we spot an opportunity to do something good for a colleague or a customer, we take it

🎉 Benefits

  • We’re committed to building a diverse and inclusive workplace and a great culture of people who love coming to work to build a better world.
  • You’d be a part of a rapidly growing team of over 200 with expertise across energy, technology, marketing, and operations.
  • Be part of a growing technology start-up that will shape the future of household and grid energy use.
  • Enjoy a lively, collaborative workspace at our buzzing Melbourne CBD headquarters in the heart of the city
