Job description

Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the role

As an Energy Analyst, you'll join the Market Strategy & Portfolio team and help shape  commercial decisions that keep Contact's wholesale energy portfolio running at its best. Part of a collaborative, highly connected team working alongside real-time trading, fuels, portfolio management, and generation specialists to optimise how energy flows across Aotearoa, this is complex, fast-moving work, but that’s what makes it exciting. If you're curious about energy markets and motivated by solving meaningful commercial challenges, you'll find plenty to engage with here.

Reporting to the Market Strategy & Portfolio Manager and ideally based in Wellington, you'll work across short and mid-term portfolio strategy, real-time trading support, and fuel management activities. You'll analyse market conditions, assess risks and opportunities, and help translate complex information into practical decisions that drive value.

Your work will include:

  • Developing and maintaining short-term electricity and gas market strategies
  • Monitoring market conditions and identifying emerging risks and opportunities
  • Supporting real-time trading decisions during dynamic market events
  • Performing portfolio optimisation and reservoir management activities
  • Executing operational processes including gas nominations and short-term trading actions
  • Working closely with colleagues across the Wholesale business to align strategy and execution
  • Identifying opportunities to improve systems, processes, and ways of working

There is also an on-call component as part of the team's shared roster.

No two days are quite the same. One day you might be analysing market trends and recommending strategic responses; the next, helping navigate a rapidly changing market event where timely decisions matter.

Kowaikoe| About You

You don't need to have worked in an energy market before to thrive here.

What's most important is your ability to think critically, make sense of complex information, and apply sound judgement when situations don't come with clear answers. You enjoy being challenged by difficult problems and are motivated by understanding how things work.

What you'll bring (must-haves):

  • A tertiary qualification in Finance, Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Science, or a related discipline
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capability
  • Experience using data to generate insights and support decision-making
  • The ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and effectively
  • Sound judgement and the confidence to make recommendations when information is incomplete
  • A collaborative approach and the ability to build trusted working relationships

It would be great if you also have:

  • Experience in energy, utilities, trading, financial markets, or another complex commercial environment
  • Familiarity with modelling, forecasting, data analytics, or optimisation techniques
  • Experience using tools such as Python, R, SQL, Power BI, or advanced Excel
  • Exposure to operational or market-based decision-making environments

How you'll show up:

  • You're curious and eager to learn, rather than waiting to be told what to do
  • You're comfortable making decisions and learning from them, rather than getting stuck striving for perfection
  • You're open to different perspectives and willing to challenge your own thinking, rather than feeling the need to have all the answers
  • You care about the outcome and enjoy contributing to the success of the wider team

If some of this sounds like you, but not all of it, we'd still love to hear from you.

This is an opportunity to build genuine expertise in one of New Zealand's most dynamic and important industries. You'll work alongside experienced market professionals, contribute to decisions that have real commercial impact, and help shape the future of energy in Aotearoa.

We support flexible working where it works for the individual, the team and the business. Our main hubs are in Wellington, Auckland and Tauranga, and this role is best suited to someone who can work flexibly from one of these locations to enable strong in-person connection and collaboration. While we do have smaller sites across other centres of Aotearoa, proximity to a main hub is important for this role.

Contact is not a place you’ll stagnate. We’re growing, evolving, and investing in our people. We also offer a bunch of other perks like free health insurance cover, boosted KiwiSaver, access to Contact Shares, a ‘Good to be Home’ annual payment toward your home set up & wellbeing, a trail-blazing parental leave policy, twice yearly payments towards our products if you’re a Contact customer, and more!

Applications close on Friday 17 July. But just like peak demand, great talent surges early, so if this role sparks your interest, power up your application now!

Here at Contact Energy (Te Mata Hiko), we know our strength lies in developing a sense of belonging - one that helps us attract and retain people with a broad range of perspectives and experiences.

We’re committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to bring their whole selves to work. Our goal is to reflect the diversity of our customers and communities to help build a better Aotearoa New Zealand.

We have a rich community of talented people that we support to thrive at Contact.

Our inclusive hiring process is designed to embrace the diversity of Aotearoa New Zealand, ensuring a wide range of perspectives are included in our decision-making and helping reduce bias along the way.

The wellbeing of our kaimahi is super important to us.

We use employee insights to offer a range of initiatives and resources to support physical, mental, financial and emotional wellbeing – including flexible working arrangements, employee network groups and a market-leading parental leave policy.

At Te Mata Hiko, we want everyone to thrive. We welcome applicants far and wide - of every age, stage, background, and pride. Join us and be part of a team that values your passion and attitude just as much as your experience and skills.

Please note, only candidates with the right to live and work in New Zealand will be considered for this role.

Research shows that while men apply to jobs where they meet 60% of the criteria, women and those in underrepresented groups tend to only apply if they tick every box. We're not about box ticking, so if you think you have what it takes but don't meet everything stated above, please still get in touch. We'd love to kōrero.

Te Mata Hiko (Contact Energy) does not accept any CVs received from recruitment agencies where a formal engagement has not been confirmed and agreed to with our Talent team. In the event that unsolicited CVs are submitted by recruitment agencies, Te Mata Hiko (Contact Energy) reserves the right to contact these candidates directly and consider them for current/future vacancies without any financial obligation to the recruitment agency in question. This will also apply to any CVs sent directly to line managers.
