Job description

JOB SUMMARY

The Truck Driver is a foundational, vital member of the Paving Division team. This role is responsible for the safe, compliant, and highly efficient transportation of heavy civil construction materials—specifically Hot-Mix Asphalt (HMA), road base, and millings—to and from active paving sites and plant locations.

Operating heavy-duty commercial vehicles (such as tractor-trailers, live-floor trailers, or end dumps) across public roadways and inside active construction zones, the Truck Driver must maintain a high degree of situational awareness and adhere strictly to Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations.

Beyond hauling materials, this individual acts as a collaborative extension of the paving crew. The role requires seamless synchronization with dispatch, plant operators, and the paving foreman to ensure an uninterrupted material flow that keeps the 'paving train' moving efficiently. When not actively driving, the employee is expected to assist with basic equipment transport cross-training and general site labor as needed.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Safely haul hot-mix asphalt (HMA) and millings from production plants to job sites, ensuring materials are protected, handled, and delivered within strict project timeframes.
  • Monitor and deliver asphalt materials ensuring they are transported efficiently to maintain the correct, optimal temperature required for paving placement and compaction.
  • Ensure all loads of materials or equipment are properly tarped, tied down, and secured in strict compliance with state and federal cargo securement laws.
  • Work closely with the active paving crew to back up to and discharge materials directly into the asphalt paver hopper, shuttle buggy, or windrow with precision, matching the speed and flow of the paving train.
  • Perform and formally document comprehensive daily Pre-Trip and Post-Trip vehicle inspections to ensure compliance with DOT regulations and Martin Marietta safety standards.
  • Conduct standard preventive maintenance on assigned vehicles, including fueling, checking, and topping off fluid levels and checking tire pressures.
  • Keep the vehicle clean, professional, and free of defects, paying particular attention to the frequent removal of sticky asphalt buildup from the truck beds, gates, and tires using approved release agents.
  • Accurately manage, track, and return all delivery tickets, weigh bills, and hours-of-service logs via Electronic Logging Devices in precise accordance with DOT policy.
  • Maintain full and uncompromising compliance with Martin Marietta's signature 'Guardian Angel' safety culture, putting safety first in every task, reporting near-misses, and utilizing all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Exercise expert judgment and extreme caution when maneuvering heavy trucks on uneven terrain, loose ground, tight spaces, and active high-traffic public corridors.
  • Continuously scan for and avoid active job site hazards, including overhead utility lines, ground instability, moving ground equipment, and blind spots.
  • Maintain constant communication via two-way radio, CB radio, or standardized hand-signals with the paving foreman, spotters, and dump-men to coordinate smooth traffic and dumping patterns.
  • Proactively cross-train on lowboy and utility trailers to safely learn how to load, secure, and transport heavy paving equipment (such as asphalt pavers, steel-drum rollers, and skid steers) between project locations.
  • When ground conditions or haul schedules cause truck downtime, step out of the cab to assist the paving crew with tasks such as shoveling, raking asphalt, clearing debris, and cleaning joint lines.
  • Assist in setting up, maintaining, and tearing down work zone Maintenance of Traffic devices, including traffic cones, barricades, and signage to safeguard the crew and the traveling public.
