Job description

Position Summary

Perform, lead, train, and trouble-shoot power systems engineering studies in the areas of electromagnetic transients, load flow, short-circuit, transient stability, control design, equipment applications, and other transmission and distribution (T&D) areas. Maintain, enhance, and apply knowledge of concepts, technology and regulations in the power systems field.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct insulation coordination, harmonic, short-circuit, grounding, and other related studies for T&D equipment, including FACTS, HVDC, and converter-based resources utilizing ATP, EMTP, EMTP-RV, PSCAD, MATLAB, ASPEN, CAPE, CDEGS and other similar software.
  • Conduct load flow, transient stability, reactive planning, infrastructure re-enforcement, generator interconnection, and related studies, including FACTS, HVDC, and converter-based resources utilizing PSLF, PSS/E, DigSILENT, DSA Tools, Power World, and other similar software.
  • Perform studies on renewable resources, distributed energy resources, battery energy storage, relay and protection, performance monitoring, and grid modernization applications utilizing CYME, Synergi, etap, Milsoft, and Plexos software tools.
  • Lead and support projects to ensure completion within specified schedules and budgets. Lead and support project plans specifying scope, budget, schedule and resources. Prepare project activity reports and communicate to stakeholders.
  • Develop, organize, and analyze data for systems studies. Leverage data mining and visualization techniques to perform data analysis, present data and ensure data integrity.
  • Use C, C++, MATLAB, Java, Perl, Python, and others to enhance models and simulations. Create and test software tools to automate data analysis, data monitoring, reporting and ensuring data integrity.
  • Increase efficiency and support coworker use of software tools used in power system engineering studies.
  • Lead in standard of quality and set example to meet schedules for simulation model development, analytics and reporting. Use and lead an engineered process throughout the stages of the study.
  • Prepare, present, and support others in the preparation and delivery of technical reports and presentations to internal and external customers on schedule, within quality standards, with minimal re-work, and positive internal and external feedback. Ensure consistent report quality with grammar and formatting standards.
  • Maintain, enhance, apply and train others in concepts in grid planning, interconnection, operations, equipment application, and associated history and evolution of standards, orders, guidelines, and tariffs for use in studies.
  • Condition and support others in the conditioning of the model and judging simulation output based on expected system and equipment capabilities and operation. Estimate and support others in the estimating of system and equipment parameters based on known values, where applicable, or in providing feedback when such values are questionable.
  • Support generator testing, model development and validation to standards.
  • Support study initiatives for other MEPPI divisions/departments.
  • Support development of business opportunities towards achieving division objectives.
  • Support proposals in response to customer specifications, RFP/RFQ, and technical information requests.
  • Prepare and lead technical papers and articles for publication in professional society journals and trade magazines, and for presentation at professional society meetings, industry conferences, and trade exhibitions.
  • Further the goals and positive, professional image of PSED through interaction with other MEPPI divisions and vendors.
  • Know MEPPI’s Quality, Safety and Environmental Policies. Be able to fully discuss the importance of these policies and how they impact work.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a minimum 3-5 years of experience in electric power engineering, or equivalent education and experience.
  • Intermediate knowledge of electric power systems and equipment operation and control.
  • Intermediate knowledge of EROs, developers, and public and investor-owned utility business planning flow as related to initial feasibility, planning, engineering, implementation, and operations stages.
  • Intermediate organizational, presentation, communication, and technical writing skills required to communicate with customers and employees.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and on several projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with the following programs and modeling tools:
  • Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, and related
  • ATP, EMTP, EMTP-RV, PSCAD, MATLAB, ASPEN, CAPE, and CDEGS
  • PSLF, PSS/E, DigSILENT, DSA Tools, Power World, and related
  • CYME, Synergi, etap, Milsoft, and Plexos
  • Economic software like PROMOD or MAPS
  • C, C++, MATLAB, Java, Perl, Python, and others
  • Advanced knowledge of industry standards and guides (NESC, NERC, IEEE, IEC, and CIGRE).
