Program & Location: Monarch House - New Bedford, MA Education: High School diploma or equivalent (GED) Pay Range : $20-27/hr Status: Part Time, 16+hrs/week, must be available to work weekends, availability to pick up shifts as needed.

About Us

SEMCOA's (Southeast Massachusetts Council on Advocacy) mission is to advocate for and provide support to individuals, families, and communities in the areas of substance use, mental illness, domestic violence, homelessness, and parenting. SEMCOA operates four emergency assistance congregate family shelters and additional scattered sites that provide supportive services to families and assist them with securing permanent housing. SEMCOA also provides residential recovery home treatment to individuals with substance use disorders, as well as transitional and permanent housing stability and support programs. Our portfolio also includes two graduate sober houses, the Family Preservation Program, as well as Greater Brockton and Greater Attleboro Taunton Healthy Families programs.

Cook Requirements

  • Must present as courteous and professional at all times
  • Demonstrated flexibility and ability to perform multiple tasks
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to organize ideas in logical and clear fashion
  • Proficient and knowledge of basic computer skills and software programs including the ability to learn, use and train
  • Must have the ability to work with others in cooperative and collaborative manner
  • An understanding of the relationship between substance uses and mental health issues and/or self-help programs
  • An understanding of boundaries and ethics
  • Comply with Federal Regulations, 42 CFR Part 2, Substance Abuse Confidentiality Regulations and HIPAA Regulations
  • Certification in the HPAO approved de-escalation program
  • Maintain all health screenings as mandated by licensing agencies
  • Obtain and maintain Safe Serv and Allergen Awareness certification within 6 months of employment
  • Attend all other training deemed necessary by the Program/Kitchen Manager .

Cook - Residential Services Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversee the day-to-day operation of a kitchen in a recovery home setting including possessing sufficient cooking, kitchen, and purchasing skills
  • Maintain a clean and safe kitchen environment
  • Direct residents as to the proper ways in the setting up and breaking down of the kitchen and dining areas
  • Purchase necessary groceries and kitchen supplies needed for the preparation of house meals
  • Ensure the purchase of items shall be within the budget established by the Program Director
  • Keep an adequate supply of food and a proper inventory of kitchen goods on hand
  • Report to the Program Director any changes or needs which can better assist the running of the kitchen
  • Monitor residents' kitchen chores to insure they are completed in a timely manner
  • Maintain resident sign-in sheets for reporting purposes
  • Ensure all kitchen equipment and appliances are in safe working conditions
  • Practice appropriate hygiene activities including proper hand-washing procedures, wearing hair net and gloves and adheres to all sanitary standards
  • Creates, dates, posts and retains a nutritional menu for three months and accepts input and suggestions from the residents regarding food prepared
  • Always ensures safety in the kitchen area including turning off appliances, stove, etc., locking up knives, cabinets and area when not in use
  • Ensures proper labeling, rotating and disposing of all food
  • Completes refrigerator/freezer temperature logs daily and immediately addresses any issues
  • Completes ordering in a timely manner to ensure time for preparation and serving at all meals
  • Identifies residents with dietary needs/restrictions and provides alternative meals as needed
  • Provides working residents with a balanced packed meal before they leave for work
  • Serves food to residents in a timely and respectful manner
  • Other duties as assigned by Program Director.

Cook Qualifications

  • High School Degree or GED, preferred.
  • Ability to life more than 50lbs.
  • Prior kitchen/cooking experience including knowledge in inventory and food handling required.
