Overview

Summary

Under general direction of the Director of Maintenance & Operations, monitors electrical systems and performs tasks or tests which range from simple and routine to more complex assignments. May provide limited guidance to less experienced technicians. The Electrical Technician shall practice good housekeeping, with particular emphasis on avoiding the development of any condition that might contribute to personal injury. Shall comply with the operational rules and regulations of the Mount Roberts Tramway.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions

  • Monitors, troubleshoots, and corrects electrical equipment and systems malfunctions, performs planned preventive maintenance or assists with overhaul maintenance using diagnostic equipment.
  • Works from blueprints, drawings, layouts, manufacturer’s instructions or other specifications to perform work according to applicable Code.
  • Conducts basic tests which may require test equipment/set-ups or procedures as well as subjective judgment in measurements.
  • Works safely with systems operating at levels exceeding 500 volts (medium voltage).
  • Performs maintenance, tests, and repairs following oral and/or written instructions.
  • Ensures that a signed complete log is maintained wherein the actual execution of work shall be recorded. The log shall state the components serviced and the condition of the components. A record shall be kept of replacement components.
  • Authorized to discontinue operations of the aerial tramway due to physical, adverse weather, personnel or other reasons.
  • To deny access to the aerial tramway to any person; using procedures and criteria provided.
  • To oversee operational procedures and adherence to applicable regulations pertaining to the aerial tramway.
  • Ensures that his/her training is kept current with common industry techniques and practices in emergency rope evacuation, emergency car evacuation, emergency drive operation, standby drive operation, top terminal generator operation, bottom terminal generator operation, and rescue winch operation. Provides, or assists with the provision of, training of same to designated employees with subsequent recording of activity; keeps current on proper emergency procedures to be followed and key employees to contact as the emergency response team.
  • Familiarizes self with lift, maintenance, and operational procedures; learns and follows proper safety procedures at all times when performing maintenance work; uses proper safety equipment (i.e., harnesses, when climbing towers or riding on top of tram cars); applies or uses lock-out procedures to prevent unexpected start-up and damage to equipment and systems.
  • When necessary due to personnel understaffing, unexpected absences, or emergencies, may perform the duties of a Tram Operator or Tram Attendant; on call during the regular tram operating season and will assist the Director of Maintenance and Operations when needed.
  • Responds to various types of emergencies and provides assistance as appropriate based on skills, knowledge, and ability.
  • Performs other site support tasks incidental to electrical maintenance assignments;
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Necessary Skills and Knowledge

  • Ability to physically climb out of the tramway cabin under the direction of the Director of Maintenance and Operations.
  • Ability to physically rope evacuate passengers and self from cabin.
  • Ability to read and interpret tramway schematics and lift blueprints, manuals, and warranty requirements.
  • General knowledge of mechanics, electrical controls, hydraulics, wire-ropes, and preventative maintenance procedures of aerial lifts or tramways.
  • Working knowledge/familiarity of tram operations systems.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other employees.
  • Ability to work directly with the public, providing information and assistance on a daily basis.
  • Ability/willingness to learn and pass on to passengers those areas of interest to visitors, such as local history, people, culture, geography, etc.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good analytical skills.
  • Basic computer skills using Word, Excel, and E-mail.
  • Good customer service skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve electrical operating problems related to the facility and its equipment.
  • Good working knowledge of common industry practices and considerations, maintenance and repair requirements and applicable building, ANSI, OSHA, NEC and health codes.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Formal training in electronics from a technical school, the military, or
  • Through completion of an Associate’s Degree in Electronic Technology
  • Current CPR/AED and first aid certificates;
  • Ability to obtain as soon as training is available.
  • Current Rope access and/or Fall Protection certificate or ability to obtain as soon as training is available.
  • Three (3) years job-related experience; or
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field
  • One (1) year of job-related experience
  • Ability to successfully pass a background check
  • Current driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five (5) years of job-related experience.
  • Journeyman electrical license.
  • Thorough knowledge in electrical maintenance and installation in ski lifts and/or aerial tramways.

Working Conditions

The work is performed on Mount Roberts from sea level to the 1800 ft. level involving constant exposure to extreme heights and dangerous overhead work in environments (i.e. inside Tram facilities, outdoor locations, etc.) where mechanical and electrical equipment is operated. Equipment may be dangerous, loud and/or have exposed moving components, or be in a confined space. When working outside the employee may be exposed to inclement weather. The Tram is a non-smoking facility with designated outside-smoking areas
