Job description
Overview
The Physical Therapist Lead is responsible for organizing and managing the physical therapy program to facilitate rehabilitation in accordance with established clinical guidelines and patient centered therapy goals. The lead therapist also provides evidence based assessment and treatment of a variety of diagnoses including, but not limited to, musculoskeletal, neurological, and cardiopulmonary dysfunction to the organization’s patient population.
Responsibilities
- Takes a lead role in the provision of patient care and physical therapy department coordination. Applies both clinical and operational management skills to meet the established quality, patient satisfaction, financial and operational goals of the department. Implements program philosophy, objectives, standards of care and procedures on consultation with leadership.
- Consistently strives to understand, anticipate, and meet the needs, expectation and satisfaction levels of patients and other “customers” and seeks feedback from others to help improve performance. Participates in data collection for use in improvement of patient care and work performance. Identifies and assists in the development of long and short-term projects to meet patient, staff, departmental and/or organizational needs.
- Ensures compliance with organizational, program and clinical policies and procedures. Assists, directs and delegates to physical therapist, physical therapy assistants and restorative techs according to their capabilities to meet patient needs. Continually evaluates the quality of physical therapy care delivered and collaborates with leadership on patient care issues. Reviews, assists, and promotes the development of policies and procedures in compliance with state, federal and regulatory requirements.
- Monitors clinical documentation in the medical records to ensure completeness and accuracy and compliance with organizational and program standards. Interacts with family and referral sources. Monitors the physical therapy process utilization, ensuring timely completion of the physical therapy assessment and care plans as well as appropriateness of content. Monitors clinical management of: patient assessment protocols, treatment protocols, overall performance of cognitive and functional activities, assuring appropriate education is being provided to patient/family/staff.
- Assists in scheduling staff based on physical therapy census and staffing pattern. Assists in hiring of staff, progressive discipline and staff evaluations. Serves as a resource to the staff. Coaches, directs, supports and evaluates educational needs of staff. Assists in developing and providing formal and informal learning experiences for staff through identification of staff clinical needs. Participates in the orientation and /or on-the-job training of personnel. Huddles daily with the physical therapy team to disseminate information. Assumes the responsibility of the Rehab Manager in his/her absence.
- Develops and maintains communication with physicians and the multi-disciplinary care team regarding patient’s status and needs. Participates in multi-disciplinary teams meetings, representing physical therapy perspectives on patient’s condition/progress.
- Provides leadership with information necessary for making decisions affecting patient care, staffing and program implantation. Assists in preparation and control of department operational budget; monitors supplies/equipment, ordering/repairing as required to ensure the quality of care and operational standards are maintained. Ensures a safe, secure, clean environment for patients, staff and visitors. Ensures cost effectiveness in the use of personnel and supplies.
- Provides direct patient care consistent with the Physical Therapist job description.
- All other duties as assigned by department.
Qualifications
Education / Training
- Bachelor's Degree CAPTE Accredited Physical Therapy Program
Experience Requirements
- 3 to 5 years Physical Therapy experience
Preferences: Supervisory experience preferred
