The Medical Gases Technician supports hospital and clinical operations on the installation by maintaining, inspecting, and repairing medical gas systems and related infrastructure. This includes oxygen, nitrous oxide, medical air, vacuum systems, and gas distribution piping. The technician ensures safe operation, continuous availability, and regulatory compliance of medical gas delivery systems critical to patient care. Work is performed in accordance with NFPA standards, hospital policies, base regulations, and biomedical safety requirements.
Responsibilities
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on medical gas systems including oxygen, nitrous oxide, nitrogen, CO₂, medical air compressors, vacuum pumps, manifolds, alarms, and distribution piping.
- Inspect system components, test pressure levels, monitor purity/quality, and verify proper operation of outlets, zone valves, alarms, and control panels.
- Maintain manifold systems, cylinders, storage racks, and bulk gas equipment to ensure continuous supply to hospital and clinic facilities.
- Repair leaks, replace valves and fittings, and troubleshoot system faults to prevent service disruption.
- Monitor and document system performance, pressure readings, safety checks, and maintenance activities in accordance with NFPA standards (NFPA 99) and hospital protocols.
- Support installation or modification of medical gas pipelines, zone valve boxes, alarms, and distribution components.
- Assist healthcare personnel by responding to medical gas service requests, alarms, or equipment concerns.
- Maintain strict safety and contamination‑control practices in patient‑care and sterile environments.
- Ensure gas cylinder handling, storage, and transport follow OSHA, NFPA, and base safety guidelines.
- Use base CMMS systems (e.g., MAXIMO) to record work orders, parts usage, inspections, and equipment histories.
- Coordinate with biomedical engineering, facility maintenance, public works, and hospital staff to ensure safe and reliable operations.
- Participate in emergency response to system failures or gas supply interruptions affecting patient care.
- Maintain clean and organized tools, equipment, and work vehicles.
- May be required to work weekends, holidays, early and late shifts N/A
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education / Certifications: .
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Must have a driver’s country of origin license.
- Trained and certified per NFPA 99, NFPA 55, CGA-8, CGA G-6, CGA P18, and all other reference data with these documents. Certifications can be completed on Program within first year of employment.
- Certified in accordance with ASSE 6010, Professional Qualification Standard for Medical Gas Systems Installers, certifications can be completed on Program within first year of employment.
- Experience:
- At least two (2) years’ experience in masonry, concrete work, carpentry, or general construction
- Skills & Technology Used:
- English proficiency Reading & Speaking Level 2, Writing Level 1
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and system diagrams
- Strong mechanical and troubleshooting skills
- Ability to work safely in hospital and clinical environments, including isolation areas and sterile spaces
- Physically able to lift cylinders, climb ladders, bend, kneel, and work in mechanical rooms and tight spaces
- Strong communication skills and ability to coordinate with medical and technical staff
- Material & Equipment Directly Used:
- Pressure gauges, flow meters, leak‑detection equipment, and level monitors
- Tools for pipeline repair: wrenches, cutters, torches (as permitted), testers, hand and power tools
- Gas cylinders, regulators, manifolds, storage racks, fittings, and medical‑grade piping
- Vacuum pumps, compressors, alarms, and control devices
- PPE as required for hospital and base safety (gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, respirators)
- CMMS systems (MAXIMO or similar) via tablet or computer
- Cleaning and sanitizing supplies appropriate for clinical environments
- Working Environment:
- Must be capable of working in an extreme weather condition with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Indoor and/or outdoor environment with very adverse and harsh conditions (i.e., hot, wet, tropical environment with average temperatures of 130 degrees in the summer months).
- Includes some industrial production conditions as well.
- The worker is subject to both environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside.
- The worker is subject to noise. There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard about the ambient noise level.
- Physical Activities:
- Heavy work. Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Work may require heavy lifting, stooping, climbing, prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, and working with or in areas where potential could exist for exposure to physical, chemical, or biological agents.
- Employee use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required for some situations. PPE includes, but is not limited to, head, foot, torso, respiratory, vision, and hearing protective devices.
