Under the supervision of the Electrical Supervisor, the Diesel Generator Mechanic is responsible for installing, maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing diesel-powered generators and associated electrical and mechanical components. This role ensures reliable operation of standby, prime, and emergency power systems in support of facility operations and mission‑critical requirements

Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on diesel generators, engines, alternators, automatic transfer switches (ATS), and control panels.
  • Install, repair, and maintain electrical systems including wiring, panels, breakers, conduit, lighting, and distribution equipment.
  • Diagnose mechanical and electrical issues using technical manuals, diagnostic tools, and schematics.
  • Conduct generator load bank testing, performance checks, and system inspections according to service schedules.
  • Repair or replace components such as fuel pumps, injectors, voltage regulators, wiring, relays, contactors, sensors, switches, and circuit breakers.
  • Install and commission new generator systems, ensuring proper electrical connections, grounding, and regulatory compliance.
  • Troubleshoot power outages, equipment failures, and electrical faults, responding to emergency service calls as needed.
  • Maintain accurate service logs, maintenance records, and inventory of parts and consumables.
  • Ensure compliance with electrical codes, safety standards, and environmental regulations.
  • Coordinate with facility personnel, mechanics, and supervisors to ensure reliable system performance.
  • Updating work orders using either a tablet, computer and/or handwritten on paper workorder. Updates included changing the work order status, inputting a log, requesting material and time performance
  • May be required to work weekends, holidays, early and late shifts
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education / Certifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must have a driver’s country of origin license.
  • Ability to obtain a U.S. Government Motor Vehicle Operator’s License
  • Technical certification in diesel mechanics or generator systems preferred

Experience

  • At minimum Four (4) years’ professional experience in as a generator mechanic, electrician, or similar technical role

Skills & Technology Used

  • English proficiency Reading & Speaking Level 2, Writing Level 1
  • Professional experience as a generator mechanic, electrician, or similar technical role
  • Strong understanding of diesel engines, power generation equipment, and electrical systems
  • Knowledge of electrical codes (NEC or equivalent), safety practices, and lockout/tagout procedures
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical diagrams, electrical schematics, and wiring blueprints
  • Skilled in troubleshooting mechanical and electrical systems
  • Physically able to lift heavy equipment, work in confined spaces, and operate tools safely
  • Ability to work independently and respond to emergency situations

Physical Activities

  • Heavy work. Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Work may require heavy lifting, stooping, climbing, prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, and working with or in areas where potential could exist for exposure to physical, chemical, or biological agents.
  • Employee use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required for some situations. PPE includes, but is not limited to, head, foot, torso, respiratory, vision, and hearing protective devices.
  • Must comply with all Fire and Safety Regulations and post policies.

Working Environment

  • Must be capable of working in an extreme weather condition with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Indoor and/or outdoor environment with very adverse and harsh conditions (i.e., hot, wet, tropical environment with average temperatures of 130 degrees in the summer months).
  • Includes some industrial production conditions as well.
  • The worker is subject to both environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside.
  • The worker is subject to noise. There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard about the ambient noise level.
