CNC Programmer & Setup Technician (Swiss CNC)

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced CNC Programmer & Setup Technician to support precision manufacturing operations in a fast-paced medical device manufacturing environment. This role is responsible for programming, setting up, and optimizing Swiss-style CNC machines while developing efficient machining processes for new and existing products.

The ideal candidate has extensive experience with Swiss CNC machines, particularly Tornos equipment , and is passionate about continuous improvement, precision machining, and delivering high-quality components that meet tight tolerances. This position works closely with Engineering, Quality, and Production teams to ensure new programs and setups are production-ready and optimized for efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, edit, and optimize CNC programs for Swiss-style CNC machines, with a strong emphasis on Tornos equipment .
  • Perform complete machine setups, including tooling, workholding, offsets, and program verification.
  • Develop machining processes for new product introductions while improving existing manufacturing methods.
  • Select appropriate cutting tools, fixtures, and workholding solutions to maximize productivity and quality.
  • Optimize cycle times, tooling strategies, and machining parameters to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
  • Troubleshoot machining, tooling, and program-related issues to minimize downtime.
  • Conduct first article inspections and validate machining processes prior to production release.
  • Train machine operators on new setups, tooling requirements, and production processes.
  • Update existing CNC programs using modern machining techniques and continuous improvement principles.
  • Maintain compliance with quality standards, engineering drawings, and manufacturing specifications.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Quality, and Manufacturing teams to support production goals and new product development.
  • Support Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives throughout the machining department.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or trade school certification in machining or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience operating Swiss CNC machines in a precision manufacturing environment.
  • Minimum 3 years of CNC setup experience .
  • Minimum 2 years of CNC programming experience , preferably with Swiss-style CNC machines .
  • Strong experience with Tornos Swiss screw machines is required .
  • Proficiency with CAD/CAM software, including SolidWorks and/or AutoCAD .
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, GD&T, engineering drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Experience selecting tooling, fixtures, and machining strategies for precision components.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in medical device, aerospace, or other highly regulated manufacturing environments.
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Experience performing first article inspections and process validation.
  • Knowledge of precision inspection equipment and metrology.
  • Understanding of ISO 13485, FDA-regulated manufacturing, or other quality management systems.
  • Experience mentoring or training CNC operators on setup and machining best practices.
