About the Role
The Tax Manager is responsible for leading complex tax compliance, tax planning, and consulting engagements for a diverse portfolio of business and individual clients. This role combines advanced technical tax expertise with client relationship management, staff development, and strategic advisory services. The ideal candidate has extensive public accounting experience, strong knowledge of federal and state tax regulations, and the ability to provide innovative tax solutions that support clients' financial and business objectives while ensuring compliance with applicable tax laws.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and review complex federal, state, and local business, individual, partnership, S corporation, C corporation, fiduciary, and nonprofit tax returns.
- Manage multiple tax engagements simultaneously, ensuring timely completion, technical accuracy, and compliance with applicable tax laws and regulations.
- Develop and maintain strong client relationships by providing proactive tax planning, consulting, and compliance services tailored to each client's business objectives.
- Research complex tax issues, interpret federal and state tax regulations, develop practical solutions, and prepare well-supported technical memoranda and written conclusions.
- Identify tax savings opportunities, credits, deductions, and planning strategies that help clients minimize tax liabilities and achieve long-term financial goals.
- Collaborate with clients and internal professionals to develop strategic tax solutions for business growth, transactions, entity structuring, and operational planning.
- Supervise, mentor, train, and evaluate tax professionals, providing ongoing coaching, technical guidance, and career development support.
- Review staff workpapers and tax returns to ensure quality, accuracy, and adherence to firm standards and professional requirements.
- Identify opportunities to expand client relationships by recommending additional tax advisory, consulting, and value-added professional services.
- Stay current on changes to federal, state, and local tax legislation, accounting standards, and regulatory developments that may impact clients.
- Develop expertise in specialized tax service areas, including public company taxation, financial institutions, international taxation, cross-border compliance, expatriate taxation, transaction advisory, and other complex tax matters.
- Utilize tax preparation, research, and workflow technology to improve efficiency, accuracy, and client service.
- Maintain the confidentiality of sensitive financial information while complying with professional ethics, regulatory requirements, and information security policies.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Enrolled Agent (EA), or an equivalent professional credential required.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive public accounting or corporate tax experience.
- Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local tax laws, tax compliance, tax planning, and tax research.
- Experience preparing and reviewing complex individual and business tax returns for a variety of entity types.
- Proven ability to manage multiple client engagements while meeting deadlines and maintaining exceptional quality standards.
- Strong analytical, research, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex tax concepts to clients and stakeholders.
- Experience leading, mentoring, and developing tax professionals in a collaborative environment.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook, with the ability to learn new tax technologies and software platforms.
- Ability and willingness to travel as needed to support client engagements and business development activities.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with tax preparation and engagement management software, including CCH ProSystem fx Engagement or similar platforms.
- Experience using professional tax research tools such as CCH AnswerConnect, Thomson Reuters Checkpoint, Bloomberg Tax, or comparable research software.
- Knowledge of international taxation, cross-border compliance, expatriate taxation, transaction advisory services, and tax implications of mergers and acquisitions.
- Experience serving clients across multiple industries, including financial services, manufacturing, healthcare, nonprofit organizations, and closely held businesses.
- Demonstrated success identifying business development opportunities and expanding client relationships through strategic tax advisory services.
- Commitment to continuous professional development and staying current with evolving tax legislation, regulatory guidance, and industry best practices.
