Accounting Manager
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Accounting Manager to oversee the day-to-day accounting operations for a growing construction management organization. This individual will play a key role in ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining strong internal controls, and supporting project teams with timely financial information. The ideal candidate has a strong accounting foundation, leadership experience, and a solid understanding of the construction industry.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee the daily accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and month-end close.
- Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with ASPE.
- Lead the month-end and year-end close processes, including account reconciliations and journal entries.
- Manage cash flow, banking activities, and working capital requirements.
- Monitor project financial performance, including job costing, work-in-progress (WIP), percentage of completion, and project profitability.
- Review subcontractor invoices, construction draws, progress billings, and holdback calculations.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis for both corporate and project operations.
- Ensure compliance with HST, payroll remittances, WSIB reporting, and other regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate annual audits and liaise with external accountants, financial institutions, and other stakeholders.
- Develop and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to improve efficiency and accuracy.
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff while fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
- Partner with operations and project management teams to provide financial insights that support business decisions.
Qualifications
- CPA designation (or actively pursuing) is strongly preferred.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
- Previous experience within the construction, real estate development, or project-based industry is required.
- Strong understanding of construction accounting principles, including job costing, WIP schedules, progress billing, and holdbacks.
- Experience preparing financial statements and supporting year-end audits.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
- Experience with construction accounting software such as Jonas, Sage 300, Viewpoint, Procore Financials, or similar ERP systems is considered an asset.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across finance and operations.
