Job description

Butcher Power Products (BPP) designs and manufactures mission‑critical and industrial power solutions for essential infrastructure nationwide. Headquartered in Sacramento, CA, our teams collaborate closely across engineering, manufacturing, and operations to build reliable, high‑quality systems and take pride in delivering work that truly matters.

Job Summary: The Lead Wiring Diagram Designer runs BPP's wiring design group. You oversee a team of Wiring Designers and make sure every point-to-point diagram, panel layout, and schematic support drawing goes out accurate, complete, and on schedule. You report to the Head of Electrical Design and act as the bridge between EE leadership and the wiring design team. This is a working lead seat. You carry your own drawing load on the hardest and highest-priority jobs, and on top of that you keep the team's output consistent, catch problems before they ship, and build the standards and training that bring designers up to speed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce accurate, complete point-to-point wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and schematic support drawings in AutoCAD using BPP tool palettes, custom blocks, and title block standards. You stay on the board, especially for complex or high-priority work.
  • Assign and balance drawing work across the team based on project priority, due dates, and each designer's capacity. Keep the Head of EE Design informed on workload, bottlenecks, and at-risk deliverables.
  • Review the team's point-to-point diagrams and panel layouts for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with BPP standards before release. You're the last check before drawings leave the group.
  • Track recurring errors and knowledge gaps. Build targeted training, documentation, or quick-reference guides to close them.
  • Own BPP drafting conventions for the wiring group: layer naming, block usage, title blocks, wire tagging, terminal mapping, and annotation. Keep them current and make sure the team follows them.
  • Develop and maintain the wiring team's block and library set. Work directly with the CAD team to build, test, and roll out custom blocks, dynamic blocks, and tool palettes the designers rely on.
  • Onboard new Wiring Designers. Walk them through BPP tool palettes, custom blocks, and dynamic blocks hands-on, and run them through a defined skills checklist so ramp up is consistent.
  • Maintain a training curriculum that lays out the skills and competencies every designer should hit, from junior through mid-level.
  • Lead process-review sessions to find inefficiencies and error sources in the drafting workflow. Drive the fixes.
  • Build and maintain checklists, best-practice guides, and quick-reference docs that standardize common tasks (wire tagging, terminal mapping, panel spacing, revision control).
  • Serve as the primary point of contact between the wiring design team and EE management. Surface capacity constraints, skill gaps, and urgent deadlines early.
  • Coordinate with Manufacturing Engineering and Production to gather as-built feedback, then turn that into drafting improvements the team adopts.
  • Stay current on applicable standards (NEC, UL 891, UL 1558, ANSI/IEEE) as they apply to panel wiring, labeling, and construction. Be the team's first stop when a code or standards question comes up in a customer spec or drawing package.

Qualifications: Required

  • 6+ years creating point-to-point wiring diagrams and control panel layouts, ideally in switchgear, control panel, or industrial power distribution manufacturing.
  • 2+ years leading or supervising a small team of drafters or designers.
  • Expert in AutoCAD. Strong with tool palettes, custom and dynamic blocks, layer management, and title block standards.
  • Reads and interprets single-line diagrams, schematics, and customer specs without hand-holding.
  • Solid working knowledge of NEC, UL 891, UL 1558, and ANSI/IEEE as they apply to panel wiring, labeling, and clearances.
  • Sharp eye for detail. Catches the small stuff (wire tag mismatches, terminal numbering errors, wire sizing, missing revisions) and teaches the team to do the same.
  • Clear written and verbal communication. Can give direct feedback, push back when something looks wrong, and explain the why behind a standard. Preferred:
  • Experience with switchgear, PDUs, or data center power equipment.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD Electrical or similar schematic-capture tools.
  • Exposure to SharePoint-based document control workflows.
  • Prior experience in a manufacturing environment with direct shop floor interaction.
