Apprentice Heavy Duty Mechanic
2nd, 3rd, or 4th Year | 4-Day Work Week | Lethbridge, AB

This position works four 10-hour shifts per week on a consistent three-week rotation. You will work 40 paid hours each week while getting two extended three-day breaks in every rotation.

As heavy truck technology continues to evolve, you will build your knowledge of diagnostics, electrical systems, aftertreatment, and the latest repair procedures while progressing toward Journeyman certification.

The Role
You will continue developing your skills across preventative maintenance, inspections, repairs, diagnostics, and troubleshooting on heavy duty trucks and equipment.
Repair & Maintenance
- Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, and general repairs
- Complete hands-on repairs under the guidance of experienced Journeypersons and Shop Foremen
- Test vehicles to ensure they meet safety standards and manufacturer specifications
- Coordinate with Parts Technicians to ensure required components are available or ordered
Troubleshooting
- Review repair concerns and work orders provided by Service Advisors
- Assist with troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and electronic systems
- Diagnose faults using appropriate diagnostic equipment and OEM procedures
- Interpret diagnostic results and identify recommended repairs
- Communicate findings and support accurate repair timelines
Documentation
- Accurately record labour time, diagnostics, repairs performed, and parts used
- Complete repair orders and inspection documentation thoroughly and accurately
- Ensure documentation meets company, OEM, warranty, and regulatory requirements
Professional Development
- Participate in ongoing technical training
- Continue developing your diagnostic and repair skills on modern heavy truck systems
- Stay current with evolving technologies and industry best practices
Your 4-Day Work Week
You will work four 10-hour shifts each week from 7:00 AM – 5:30 PM , including a 30-minute unpaid break.
The schedule follows a consistent three-week rotation
Week 1: Monday – Thursday Off: Friday, Saturday and Sunday
Week 2: Wednesday – Saturday Off: Sunday, Monday and Tuesday
Week 3: Monday – Tuesday and Friday – Saturday Off: Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday
Then the rotation repeats.
You get 40 paid hours every week while working only four days, with two extended three-day breaks in every three-week rotation.
Education, Certification & Experience
- Registered 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Year Heavy Equipment Technician Apprentice
- Class 1 or Class 3 driver’s licence is an asset
- Previous experience working on heavy duty trucks or equipment is an asset
