Start Elevator, a fast-growing leader in the elevator services industry, is seeking an Elevator Service Technician to support our expanding operations in the New York and New Jersey markets.
Job Summary
The Elevator Service Technician is responsible for performing advanced maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and servicing of elevators and related equipment. This role ensures all equipment operates safely, reliably, and in compliance with New York and New Jersey state codes, local regulations, and OSHA standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems on elevators, escalators, dumbwaiters, and lifts
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and safety inspections in accordance with state and local code requirements (NYC DOB, NYS, NJ DCA as applicable)
- Conduct annual and periodic safety tests to ensure proper operation of all safety devices
- Respond to service calls, including emergency repairs, and participate in on-call rotation
- Maintain accurate maintenance logs, inspection reports, and compliance documentation
- Identify equipment deficiencies and recommend modernization, repair, or replacement solutions
- Ensure all work is performed in compliance with company standards, union agreements (if applicable), and safety regulations
- Maintain strong customer relationships and provide professional communication on job status and repairs
Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Licensing
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Valid Elevator Mechanic License required :
- New York: NY State or NYC Elevator Mechanic License
- New Jersey: NJ Elevator Mechanic License
- CET (Certified Elevator Technician) certification preferred if not required by jurisdiction
Experience & Skills
- 5+ years of experience in elevator service, repair, or maintenance
- Strong working knowledge of traction and hydraulic elevator systems
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and blueprints
- Proficiency using diagnostic tools, electrical testing equipment, and standard hand/power tools
- Experience with controllers (e.g., Otis, Schindler, TK, Dover, etc.) strongly preferred
Physical Requirements
- Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and navigate elevator shafts and pits
- Ability to lift 75+ lbs. regularly and assist with heavier materials (up to 200 lbs.)
- Comfortable working in confined spaces and around moving mechanical equipment
- Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and stand for extended periods
Work Environment
- Work performed in commercial buildings, construction sites, and mechanical spaces
- Exposure to dust, grease, noise, and temperature extremes
- May work in elevator pits, shafts, and machine rooms
- Must be available for overtime and emergency service calls
