Vice President - Deputy General Counsel
Job description
VP/Deputy General Counsel A Brief Overview The Deputy General Counsel serves as the principal contact in all legal matters for the Airport Authority. The Deputy General Counsel is responsible for managing a wide variety of legal duties pertaining to leases, contracts and agreements for the Authority, representing the Authority's interest in litigation including managing contracts for various outside legal counsel and rendering all legal opinions.
What you will do
- Manages all legal affairs, including airline agreements, concession/commercial development agreements, land acquisition and ground leases, construction and consultant agreements and the lease of airport facilities.
- Provides legal opinions and advice to the CEO and Board Members on a wide variety of legal matters related to all aspects of the Airport Authority from its governance to the management and operation of Detroit Metro and Willow Run Airport.
- Serves as a member of the Authority Senior Leadership Team supporting the strategic management of the Authority and the formulation and adoption of Authority goals, objectives, strategies, policies and procedures. Develop legal strategies to support those objectives.
- Review, negotiate and approve contracts, grant agreements, concession agreements, vendor agreements, user agreements, leases, easements, permits and similar documents.
- Draft and finalize preparation of contracts or other legal documents.
- Represent the Authority in real estate transactions.
- Manage legal services contracts for outside counsel.
- Interface with other Authority Departments to ensure legal compliance with state and federal law and regulations.
- Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.
Supervisory Responsibilities Manages People: 1-5 direct employees
- Is required to interpret overall industry policy and strategy, in order to establish goals and standards
- Requires over fifteen years of previous related experience as a lower level manager and individual contributor
- Answers general questions and provides assistance; Advises and directs work teams; answers complex questions functioning as an expert resource; maintains assignment completion schedules. Often performs the same and higher-level tasks as team.
- Participates in the selection process of new employees; assists with performance appraisals; disciplinary problems are referred to a higher level. Plans, schedules, and coordinates work.
- Responsible for staffing decisions with concurrence; performance appraisals; departmental employee training and development; handles disciplinary problems in conjunction with HR.
- Responsible for multiple departments or areas, each with supervisors who have hire/fire authority with concurrence of direct manager.
- This position is at the VP and/or executive level within the authority. Reports directly into the CEO. Completed projects are reviewed primarily for attainment of objectives and effectiveness of results. The CEO is involved with problems of major impact
- Work has a controlling impact on WCAA’s mission, activities, day-to-day operations, and image, either in itself or with shared responsibility of others being subordinate. Work is governed by broad guidelines requiring considerable judgment and initiative to interpret policy in planning and implementing major projects and work assignments. Job tasks involve responsibility for major operating decisions and/or the identification of major problems of the enterprise and formulating of recommendations which directly influence long-term policies and programs
