Job description

As the Groundskeeper Supervisor, you will need to think diligently planning and executing skilled work to maintain campus grounds, landscape construction, athletic field preparation, and snow removal operations. You will be an active member of the Facilities Management team and will work closely with the Director to ensure campus layout is safe for the campus community during each season. You will thrive in this role if you like combining your landscaping background and strong working knowledge of equipment & vehicle maintenance all while skillfully operating single-chassis trucks or large-scale vehicles. To be successful in this role, you must possess experience in manicuring grounds, supervisory experience, and strong communication skills.

Your normal hours will be Monday to Friday 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, but you may have to flex your schedule to work from time to time based on the needs of the business to be a true Groundskeeper Supervisor. When our team shows up for work, they are energized and motivated to succeed all while being the most crucial piece to keeping the ESU operations humming.

What Will I Do At ESU? (AKA Essential Duties)

  • Supervises four (4) equipment operators, seven (7) groundskeepers and five (5) to ten (10) student summer workers.
  • Supervision of employees includes ensuring staff is assigned work, reviews leave requests and performs annual reviews.
  • Operate single-chassis trucks with a gross vehicle weight between 17,000 and 32,000 pounds to transport materials, supplies, and equipment to and from campus maintenance and construction sites.
  • Performs and directs staff regarding snow removal and ice control operations, including plowing, salting, cindering, and related winter weather response duties.
  • Pulls work orders, schedules assignments and closes work orders accordingly.
  • Maintains a pesticide license and applies pesticides as needed.
  • Perform manual labor and grounds maintenance activities when not operating equipment.
  • Plan (layout and procuring), plant, maintain, and care for flowers, shrubs, grass seed, sod, and other landscape materials.
  • Prepare and maintain athletic and recreational fields by lining fields, mowing, fertilizing, spraying, and performing other related turf maintenance duties necessary for competitions and campus activities.
  • Conduct routine preventive maintenance and minor repairs on assigned equipment and vehicles, including cleaning, servicing, and maintaining operational records.

What We're Looking For (AKA Qualifications)

  • Valid driver’s license without restrictions.
  • Six (6) months of experience operating and maintaining single-chassis trucks with a gross vehicle weight between 17,000 and 32,000 pounds and/or construction and maintenance equipment such as rollers, tractor-maintainers, excavators, front-loaders, hi-lifts, and ground maintenance equipment; or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Ability to safely operate heavy equipment, ground maintenance machinery, and motor vehicles in a variety of weather and terrain conditions.
  • Perform physically demanding work, including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, standing, and walking for extended periods of time.
  • Understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively within a team environment.
  • Maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the public.
  • Ability to assign and perform snow removal and emergency response duties as assigned.
  • Basic knowledge of preventive maintenance and minor repair procedures for equipment and vehicles.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying seasonal and environmental conditions, including exposure to noise, dust, fumes, and inclement weather.
  • Maintain a pesticide license.
  • Able to read, write, and comprehend English; able to follow verbal instructions.
  • Experience with Word, Excel, Teams required.
