JOB SUMMARY

The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) is a non-profit, bipartisan public policy organization established in 1962 to provide strategic insights and practical policy solutions to decision makers concerned with global security and prosperity. Over the years, it has grown to be one of the largest organizations of its kind, with a staff of some 275 employees, including more than 120 analysts working to address the changing dynamics of international security across the globe.

The Futures Lab is seeking a Research Associate to join the International Security Program (ISP). The research associate will serve as a primary researcher and writer on substantive projects focusing on the intersection of emerging technology and its implications to international security, in addition to supporting a range of additional operational and substantive goals of ISP. Additional duties include writing correspondence, coordinating events, and managing internal team scheduling. The role has room for additional growth in program management or research support roles, after mastery of essential duties and responsibilities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conducting and managing a dynamic research portfolio with minimal supervision.
  • Planning, organizing, and coordinating wargames and events and special projects in support of program research;
  • Leading projects on data-collection efforts and developing machine learning capabilities.
  • Representing the program by participating in Center and external engagements with a diverse set of experts and stakeholders;
  • Coordinating the design, layout, copyediting, and distribution of program publications in coordination with the External Relations team. Editing and fact-checking program materials with a critical perspective and strong attention to detail;
  • Writing and contributing to the grant proposal process in order to secure support and funding for new program initiatives;
  • Managing external communications, sending of event invitations, and disseminating of program publications in coordination with the ISP Outreach team.
  • Application of quantitative analysis using an econometric/statistical software like R, STATA or Python according to a project needs.
  • Other program tasks as needed.

KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • A./B.S. in International Relations, Political Science, or related field (minimum GPA 3.0 or equivalent); MA/MS in International Relations, Political Science, or related field (minimum GPA 3.2 or equivalent);
  • Strong skills on computational social science methods;
  • Understanding of U.S military capabilities;
  • Understanding of data analysis, to include major programs like R, Stata, SPSS or Python;
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage administrative responsibilities and tasks;
  • Ability to work closely and cooperatively with a range of individuals with diverse interests, backgrounds, dispositions, and executive levels;
  • Ability to write business correspondence, short program descriptions, and other relevant writing assignments, etc.;
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and multiple responsibilities under tight deadlines;
  • Must possess strong communication skills including the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from constituency groups, media, governmental entities, and the general public; and
  • Must be computer literate in Windows and macOS environment.

$60,000$63,000 USD
