Role Overview
We are excited to invite applications for the position of Lead Data Engineer. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for designing, optimizing, and maintaining robust data pipelines and systems essential for supporting HUD AI/ML proofs of concept and pilots. Your expertise will ensure the development of efficient, scalable, and secure data workflows tailored for advanced analytics and AI integration.
This is a fully remote position in support of a federal government contract, which requires a federal background check and NACI clearance. Applicants must reside in the United States.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and optimize cloud-based data pipelines and architectures specifically for AI/ML workflows.
- Develop and maintain ETL/ELT processes, ensuring high standards of data quality, consistency, and accessibility.
- Configure and manage AI/ML-ready cloud infrastructures using platforms such as AWS Bedrock and Azure OpenAI.
- Collaborate closely with Data Scientists to operationalize models and facilitate scalable AI solutions.
- Implement data governance practices, including version control and lineage tracking to ensure compliance.
- Monitor, maintain, and optimize high-performance data systems to maximize throughput.
Qualifications
Required Experience and Skills
- Over 5 years of proven experience in data engineering focused on AI/ML workflows.
- In-depth knowledge of cloud-native data systems and large-scale data processing techniques.
- Familiarity with building AI/ML pipelines and ensuring reproducible workflows while adhering to federal compliance standards.
- A history of supporting HUD OCIO initiatives is preferred.
- Capability to pass required Federal background screening and maintain government clearance and customer approval.
- Must have the legal right to work in the United States without requiring employer sponsorship.
Technical Skills
- Experience with cloud platforms like AWS Bedrock, Azure OpenAI, S3, Redshift, and Data Factory.
- Proficient in ETL/ELT frameworks including Airflow, Spark, and Databricks.
- Strong skills in data modeling, schema design, and performance optimization for AI workloads.
- Programming expertise in Python and SQL.
- Knowledge of version control systems such as Git, GitHub, or GitLab.
- Experience with data governance, metadata management, and comprehensive logging practices.

- Strong problem-solving abilities aimed at developing scalable AI/ML pipelines.

Education and Training
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field; a Master's degree is highly preferred.
- Certifications in cloud data platforms (AWS, Azure) are a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit for extended periods and work at a computer, with occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds.
