WHAT'S THE JOB?
The Small Engines Mechanic is responsible for the repair and maintenance of fire season equipment, while providing overall support to the shop team.
Your work will include:
- Carry out small engine mechanic services in order to repair and maintain various types of small engine fire season equipment owned by Outland-Horizon North, the OMNR and other clients, including fire pumps, chainsaws, generators, etc., according to exacting, prescribed MNR standards
- You will be familiar with and adhere to Outland-Horizon North safety policies and procedures
- You will participate in and contribute to daily safety meetings, while being aware of hazards and safe working conditions around you and within the workplace and completing/submitting 'Don' Walk By Forms' as required
- Required PPE must be worn for all assigned tasks, while performing regular PPE inspections
- The proper usage of all tools, devices, and power equipment in the prescribed manner, while ensuring all safety mechanisms are in proper working order prior to each use
- Complete all required paperwork including timecard/timesheets and work orders in an accurate, complete, and tidy manner, with descriptions and photos
- Additional support may include and is not limited to the engine repair program
- Other work work opportunities may be available outside of the small engine service
Qualifications
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
- Experience working with a variety of small engines, including fire pumps, chainsaws, and generators (diesel and gasoline)
- Small Engine Technician Certificate or equivalent experience
- Strong commitment to workplace safety
- Ability to work efficiently under tight time lines with attention to detail
- Ability to work effectively independently with minimal supervision, in addition to a busy team environment
- Ability to provide afterhours support is a strong asset and may include evenings and weekends
- Experience working on Wajax Mark 3 fire pumps is an asset
- First Aid Certification, Fork Lift Certification and a valid Ontario Drivers License is a strong asset
- Equipment specific training will be provided to successful candidates
- Must be able to successfully pass a Criminal Background Check

Work Schedule and Remuneration:
Small Engine Mechanics work a schedule of Monday-Friday, 8:30am-5:00pm, with additional support at times required in the evenings and weekends, dependent on current fire activity in the region.
Wages are paid based on a flat rate schedule ($23.00/hr training rate, $26.00/hr flat rate after 4 week training period). Specific pay details are discussed at the interview phase.
