This is an exciting opportunity for job seekers who are eager to learn and start a career in welding without prior experience. Join us for a three-week, unpaid training program in the Welder trade and gain valuable skills and knowledge in the construction of submarines.
Newport News Shipbuilding, a leader in the shipbuilding industry, offers the Marine Trades Training (MTT) programs in collaboration with the Virginia Ship Repair Association and local community colleges. This program, held at various locations, is designed for motivated individuals who wish to pursue a full-time position as a Welder with us. Classes are scheduled once a month, accommodating 8-10 students per session.
The trainee program consists of
- Three weeks of intensive training (120 hours)
- Shifts from 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM, Monday to Friday
Candidates with existing welding certificates or diplomas may qualify for direct application and might be exempt from the trainee program.
Upon successful completion of the training, you will learn various welding processes and participate in tasks related to the construction of aircraft carriers and submarines, ensuring adherence to the highest quality and safety standards.
As a Welder, you will
- Undergo training in welding techniques including SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, and GTAW.
- Perform structural and pipe welding using various techniques.
- Ensure compliance with stringent nondestructive testing requirements.
This role requires physical agility to work in diverse conditions, including working at heights and in confined spaces, while being vigilant about safety standards.
Must Have
- A willingness to commit to the 3-week unpaid program.
- Ability to pass a background check and drug screening.
- Physical capability to perform kneeling, squatting, lifting, and climbing tasks.
- Flexibility to work overtime and any shift as required.
- Capability to work outdoors in all weather and at extreme heights.
Nice to Have
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
