Job description

The University of Southern California (USC) department of Facilities Planning & Management (FPM) is seeking a Custodian Supervisor to join its team.

The Work You Will Do

The Custodian Supervisor supervises staff and the daily operations and activities of the custodial department. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning, scheduling, supervising and coordinating custodial projects and activities. The Custodian Supervisor trains custodial staff on Pay for Skills and is responsible for administrating the department’s budget. Furthermore, this role will provide leadership and guidance to ensure that high standards of quality, service and customer experience are maintained. Internal candidates must have successfully completed the custodial Pay for Skills program in full to be considered for this role.

The Custodian Supervisor:

  • Ensures that the quality of custodial services meets established guidelines by inspecting the work of custodial personnel and directing corrective measures to be taken when necessary to meet those guidelines. Addresses errors and problems and provides feedback.

  • Determines and monitors staffing schedule needs for peak volumes and/or special projects and arranges for temporary workers. Authorizes overtime as appropriate. Ensures staff are adequately trained and cross-trained to promote continuity of operations during vacations and extended absences.

  • Provides performance feedback and prepares documented appraisals. Screens and interviews applicants and makes hiring decisions.

  • Ensures records are kept up-to-date and maintained in accordance with applicable regulations. Develops and/or produces various operating reports (e.g., project status, work backlogs, etc.) as required.

  • Responds to customer requests, feedback, and complaints. Resolves customer complaints, follows-up with staff and provides feedback.

  • Develops and implements security related procedures such as office opening and closing routines, recognition of duress signals and key controls. Coordinates security activities with University Public Safety Department. Promotes and maintains standards for security conscious awareness and behavior. Maintains knowledge of University's crime prevention and suppression programs and services. Ensures dissemination of security related information to staff. Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

  • Enforces University rules and policies regarding employee conduct by training and counseling custodial personnel of the University's rules and policies on employee conduct, issuing verbal warnings and written reprimands for violations, and recommending progressive disciplinary action.

  • Develops an effective team of custodial personnel by instructing all employees in the Pay for Skills Program and use of materials and equipment for safe and efficient work performance, evaluating individual performances to meet APPA Level II standard. Provides technical assistance to staff for training purposes and for problem solving. Provides background and implements, interprets departmental policies, procedures and guidelines.

  • Supplies forms, materials and equipment. Liaises with vendors on issues related to products, services, and delivery.

  • Maintains specialized equipment and provides training for staff on utilization of equipment. Makes minor repairs as needed. Researches and prepares recommendations for acquisitions of specialized equipment.

  • Contributes to the development of policies, procedures and internal systems which support the work of the unit. Defines needs and coordinates the development of manual and/or automated systems to facilitate workflow.

  • Assists with planning income and expense budgets. Develops projections. Tracks actual income and/or expenses and adjusts operating plans to address variances.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.  The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

Salary Range:

  • The salary range for this position is $ $70,392.07 – $72,000.00. Job Qualifications

All candidates for the position must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • High school or equivalent specialized/technical training

  • 5 years of custodial experience

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of all aspects of custodial duties with progressive leadership/management/supervision experience

  • Demonstrated positive work ethic, ability to lead and motivate a diverse workforce

The ideal candidate for the Custodian position meets the following preferred qualifications:

  • An Associate's or Bachelor’s Degree

  • 7 years of relevant experience
