Hours: Minimum 11.25 Hours per Week
Shifts: Monday-Sunday, Nights
Status: Casual

Position Summary

Under the direction of a physician, program manager, or professional guidance of the Professional Practice Leader, the Polysomnographic Technologist administers various sleep studies in order to diagnose the type and extent of sleep disorders; Performs routine patient assessments, scores sleep records, documents other test results, and collects and transmits biological specimens for analysis. Typically requires a degree or its equivalent and certification as a polysomnographic technician.

Duties

Performs full polysomnography studies and detailed respiratory assessments as defined by the standards committee of the Canadian Sleep Society and the Canadian Thoracic Society.

  • Conducts various polysomnographic related tests involving non-invasive techniques such as electroencephalography, electrooculography, electromyography, electrocardiography, multiple sleep latency and respiratory tracings on patients.
  • Receives and prepares patients for polysomnographic studies by performing duties such as   receiving requisitions from physicians, reviewing patient case history and assessing the nature of the problems to determine process and initiates sleep study accordingly.
  • Schedules patient appointments according to clinical urgency, workload, and need  
  • Interviews patient and family, explains procedure, prepares patient for study procedures, connects patient to a variety of monitoring devices, and monitors patient’s comfort throughout the procedure.

Operates a variety of sleep study monitoring devices, calibrates and adjusts equipment throughout study

  • Prepare the patient for testing by explaining procedures, applying appropriate electrodes, monitoring devices, and acquiring appropriate medical history
  • Analyzes collected data and prepares reports that accurately summarizes the patient's sleep/wake stages, arousal occurrence, respiratory events, cardiac events, limb movements body position, arterial oxygen saturation, supplemental oxygen and nCPAP treatment, as well as other clinical events of significance
  • Sets up and calibrates equipment required for sleep studies including electrocardiograph (ECG), electromyography (EMG), electroencephalograph (EEG), electrooculography (EOG)Attaches equipment to patient to monitor and record data from oral/nasal airflow, ventilatory movement, arterial oxygen saturation, and audio/visual monitoring
  • Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment
  • Performs nCPAP/BPAP S & ST Level titration, supplemental oxygen administration

Recognizes and documents sleep and cardiopulmonary or neurological pathology when it occurs and responds with appropriate intervention, consultation, and/or treatment to ensure patient safety.

  • Monitors patient and equipment during testing and flags significant events as they occur
  • Identifies, documents and remedies the occurrence of signal artifact, electrode disconnect, and ancillary monitoring equipment malfunction
  • Performs Multiple Sleep Latency Test, Maintenance of Wakefulness Test and other testing
  • Terminates test at the appropriate time and disconnects monitors from patient   

Participates in laboratory Quality Control and Quality Assurance Programs

  • Maintains statistics on workload and service utilization. Performs other related duties as assigned

Works in compliance of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and its regulations, reporting hazards, deficiencies and contravention’s of the Act, in a timely manner.

  • At minimum, completion of a 2 year community college program in a health care discipline such as respiratory therapy or electroneurophysiology technology from an accredited institution. or recognized equivalent required.
  • Certification as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT™) required
  • Certification with the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists (BRPT)
  • Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
