Job description
J.S. Held is hiring a Senior Technical Director to join its Environmental & Risk Advisory Service Line, focusing on waste management, remediation, corrective action, and environmental liability advisory services, including remediation strategy, regulatory negotiation, and cost‑to‑closure evaluation. This role supports industrial, insurance, legal, and transactional clients addressing complex soil, groundwater, sediment, and waste‑related challenges under federal and state regulatory frameworks. In addition to remediation and corrective action work, the role may involve transaction‑driven environmental due diligence, redevelopment and brownfield support, long‑term remediation program management, and advisory support related to environmental claims and remediation cost evaluation.
This is a senior seller‑doer role requiring the ability to independently originate, develop, and sustain client relationships while also serving as a technical and project leader. The successful candidate is expected to bring an established network of client relationships and demonstrate a consistent ability to convert those relationships into awarded work. This is a fantastic opportunity for a senior environmental professional who is looking to advance their career within an emerging global consulting firm. This is a full-time salaried role.
Business Development and Client Ownership
- Independently originate, pursue, and secure remediation, environmental liability, and waste management engagements without reliance on internally sourced work.
- Serve as primary client owner with accountability for repeat work, client expansion, and long-term relationships.
- Develop opportunities across insurance, industrial, energy, manufacturing, and transactional advisory clients, including work related to remediation, liability evaluation, redevelopment, and long‑term environmental programs.
Project and Program Leadership
- Lead large, complex waste and remediation programs, including multi‑site portfolios, corrective action sites, redevelopment‑driven remediation, CCR facilities, landfills, and long‑term programmatic engagements.
- Manage projects originated directly by the Senior Technical Director from pursuit through execution and closure.
- Maintain responsibility for scope control, budgeting, scheduling, and profitability.
Technical Leadership
- Provide senior technical leadership on remediation strategy, corrective action, regulatory negotiation, and closure planning.
- Lead development of conceptual site models, remedial alternatives analyses, cost-to-closure estimates, and liability frameworks.
- Collaborate with hydrogeology, geochemistry, risk, and transactional advisory teams.
Regulatory and Stakeholder Engagement
- Interface directly with regulators (EPA, state agencies, and others) on remedial strategy, permitting, and closure.
- Support clients in enforcement, consent orders, corrective action, and redevelopment negotiations.
Advisory Services
- Supports clients on the technical aspects of environmental due diligence and transaction advisory, including environmental liability assessment, remediation risk evaluation, and pre- and post-acquisition planning.
- Provide remediation and regulatory strategy in support of redevelopment and brownfield projects, including coordination with development schedules and closure milestones.
- Provide advisory support related to environmental claims, including review and validation of remediation costs and technical support to insurance and legal stakeholders.
Team Leadership
- Mentor and develop technical staff while building a sustainable pipeline of work to support utilization and growth.
Required
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Geology, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field; advanced degrees and professional licensure (PG, PE) preferred.
- 10 – 15+ years of consulting experience in waste management, remediation, corrective action, or environmental liability advisory.
- Demonstrated experience with regulatory frameworks such as RCRA, CERCLA, CCR Rule, state corrective action programs, and risk-based closure.
- Proven track record of originating consulting work and sustaining long-term client relationships in an external consulting environment.
- Demonstrated ability to articulate an active pipeline of client opportunities within waste, remediation, and environmental liability services.
- Experience serving as primary client contact with responsibility for pursuit strategy, pricing, and repeat work.
- Ability to manage complex technical projects while maintaining profitability and schedule discipline.
- Strong technical writing, QA/QC, and presentation skills.
- Demonstrated business judgment related to opportunity selection, client development, and service-line growth.
- Ability to travel as needed
Preferred
- Experience supporting transaction advisory, insurance, or redevelopment engagements where remediation strategy, cost uncertainty, and regulatory outcomes materially affect client decisions.
