Job description

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner investigates cases of persons who die within New York City from criminal violence, by accident, by suicide, suddenly when in apparent health, when unattended by a physician, in a correctional facility or in any suspicious or unusual manner or where an application is made pursuant to law for a permit to cremate a body of a person.

OCME Human Resources & Labor Relations seeks to hire a Summer Labor & Compliance Intern to receive instruction in and assist in various routine and non-complex policy-writing, labor relations, compliance, and administrative functions for Summer 2026. Under direct supervision and with limited latitude for independent judgment and decision-making, the Labor & Compliance Intern will receive training in and assist in formatting the agency’s policy manual, maintain labor relations documents, and utilize city systems to generate reports and other material. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Format the agency’s updated policy manual in accordance with instructions.
  • Assists in reviewing and editing agency and unit standard operating procedures and policies.
  • Receives instruction and provides assistance in routine compliance tasks, including receiving and filing performance management documents, absence control letters, license verifications, and required certifications.
  • Assists in compiling documents in support of labor management meetings.
  • May attend meetings, conferences, and hearings; take notes and preserve findings.
  • Assists labor relations personnel with researching collective bargaining agreements, citywide rules ang regulations, and other material.
  • Prepares reports, spreadsheets, and other material regarding agency personnel metrics, labor grievances, and other documentation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Maximum tenure in this position is not to exceed 3 months employment per year between the months of May and September. This position is expected to end on or about late August 2026.

Candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in an accredited college, university or law school.
